TO THE EDITOR
JOE'S ARC
The name Joe Mac to me, a
rocker of the 60s, conjures up a picture in my minds eye of
the Arcadia, Joes stomping ground.
A zany character seated at the drums, Specs in an upside down
position on his dial, drinking from his boot and all the while in
time with the Dixielanders.
Joe Mac, as Cork as tripe and drisheen, Shandon, the Statute or
Christy Ring. An institution! Although as in my own case, the
institution is yet to be built that could hold him.
The funny man, with rubberlike face of Jerry Lewis, the
one-liners of Groucho Marx and what was often overlooked, the
drumming skills of Gene Krupa.
Joe receives the Peter Prendergast Award on Sunday at the
Rochestown Park Hotel, I recall the immaculately dressed Peter
Prendergast saying Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the
Dixielanders to thunderous applause, with Joe mocking Peter
behind his back. Bí Ann gan Teip to support one of our own, the
comic genius.
Neil ODonoghue, Douglas.

Dear Editor,
Just a short note to let you know how much I enjoy reading the
Douglas Weekly. I grew up and lived in Douglas and now living out
of the country. I enjoy reading your newsletter, you are doing a
wonderful job, it is so great to be able to keep in touch with
what is going on around Douglas. I really enjoy reading the GAA
section, I just want to let them know, keep up all the good work.
If I may, I just want to say Hello to all my family, I know they
read the Douglas Weekly, especially my mom, Noreen Walsh. Keep up
all the good work, it is great to be able to stay in touch.

Dear Michael,
Talk about a satisfied customer, but an Australian I served in my
bookshop during the summer really takes the biscuit. I must give
him ten out of ten for making sure I got his card. He didn't know
my actual address but that didn't stop him. Hope you can give it
a mention
Regards
John O'Leary
P.S. the address on the card read;
To The 2nd Hand Bookseller
In the same Street as Barry's Tavern
Near the Legion of Mary
Not far from the Roundabout
Douglas, Cork, Ireland
JOHN CAWLEY REPLIES
Dear Editor,
I was thrilled that you published my e-mail in your Oct 14
edition of your paper. Its really nice to stay in touch after all
those years. thank you. My mother was amazed with the number of
phone calls etc she got letting her know that her sons article
and name were in the paper. It made her feel really special.

THANKS TO PETER KELLY & DOUGLAS WEEKLY
Just a few words of thanks to yourselves and
Peter Kelly. Your help in getting the Cork County Council to
install a tap in St. Mary's Cemetery in Passage west was very
much appreciated. We and many other grave-owners have been many
years pleading for the tap.
Again Many thanks
Jackie Kelly
