OUR LOVELY DAY
The Wedding Day, an important milestone in our lives. Sadly for
those whose marriage flounders it may be termed, a 'Millstone'.
It was a 10am Church rendezvous for us on the 27/2/1965, the
reception was at the Metropole Hotel, music was by the talented
Jack Brierly (making his wedding reception debut), the honeymoon
at the Castle Hotel in Dublin's fair city. There was a choice of
3 reception prices in the pre-decimal days, 17/6 - £1 - or £1/2/6;
we opted for £1 per head.
With hindsight, morning weddings were tough going. The bride was
up at the dawn to visit the hairdresser; the groom unable to
sleep fearing hitches. Will the cars show up? Asking the best man
a thousand times "Have you got the ring"? Oh! My God,
will the bride show up?
Back then when the happy couple said farewell, they went at 3,30pm.
It was the train for us. Unlike today's farce with couples
showing up 10 minutes after the 'Farewell'. Today honeymooners
travel with friends. Incredible!
Re- 'The Honeymoon'. Couples today miss out on a beautiful
experience if the act of love has already taken place. The
honeymoon builds a martial foundation, forming a bond as two
become one. A wonderful occasion to look back on when waters get
rough on the voyage of life ahead.
The vision of my Dark Beauty on our wedding night etched in my
memory bank for all time.
