LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

THROUGH EACH ELM TREE

Join me as I meander Westward on the Mardyke Walk in the 1950's, along the narrow open stream stretching to Fitzgerald's Park.
Parallel to the rat-infested stream and St. Joseph's national School Sports Ground. My field of dreams. The clatter of wooden football boot studs on stone, crossing the old school yard and through the narrow gateway to the arena of combat. Clad in red and green and boosted by cheers of our schoolmates. All fifteen 'Christy Rings' to do battle with the South or North Mon, Sully's Quay or Turners Cross.
Directly opposite my Alma Mater, Healy's Tuck Shop. Tommy Healy Son of the owner, a handy 'keeper for Cork.
Next port of call, Pipers Amusement park. Close your eyes and here again Slim Whitman's "China Doll " o'er the night air. Chair'a'Planes, Boats, Bumpers, Horses, Punch Ball for budding 'Rocky Marciano's', try your luck with Frankie's Horses, win a ten bob note for two pence, the canvas tent, housing the Pongo (Bingo) players.
Pipers, the place to be seen in your teens. Hoping you'd meet that special someone as you stroll the Mardyke. Not a care in the world. Your laughter borne on the winds of discovery! Oh to be 'it' again.

BEST EASTER GREETINGS

Dear Douglas Weekly
Spring has come to Denmark finally. The sun is shining and the earth turns to light green and soft yellow. The birds "Sunblack" are singing in the morning and every evening the sunset is purer in the west side of the broad sky. We took off the heavy winter jackets and best season of the year
We want to send you our best Easter greetings to all of you and soy, thank you very much for your kind support with the free advertisement Your effort is turning into development work in Africa through the people in your area who join in our work! Right now we have one group volunteers working in Mozambique with education and emergency aid; one group in Zambia working with HOPE Project, which is fighting against HIV/AIDS. And, another group is in Germany -delivering information and looking for more people who want to contribute this work!
Have a really good spring and enjoy your good work!

GOOD 'CLEAN' FRIDAY - THANKS

Dear Michael,
I would like to thank the people who took part in the Good Friday clean up in Kilnagleary, Carrigaline. Though small in number, they succeeded in removing half a skip of rubbish from the roadside but unfortunately the litter-louts have returned - undoing their good work. The skip for this clean-up was provided by Cork County Council.
Regards,
Michael McGloin.
