DOUGLAS GAA

THE junior "A" footballers picked up their first brace of league points with a comfortable win over neighbours Passage last weekend.
There was never much doubt about the outcome of this contest as our lads led from start to finish to pick up their three points out of a possible four in their lads two outings.
Paul Quirke's goal helped our lads to a 16 to a goal halftime lead and while Passage did make a good recovery in the second half, our lads were always in control to record a fine win.
Gary Wade, Thomas Sheen at midfield, Paul Quirke, Pat McSweeney and Tom Kelleher up front, played well for us. The win should put the lads in the right frame of mind for next Sunday's away clash with Bishopstown at 11 a.m.
The minor "A" footballers came crashing down to earth with a bump when they were badly beaten by Nemo Rangers in the league.
This was a most disappointing display and there will have to be a lot of soul searching done among this particular group of players if they are to make any progress this season.
Defeat was also the lot of our junior "B" footballers who found the going difficult against Nemo Rangers.
Our senior footballers had their first outing of the season against St. Finbarrs in Togher but lost to the home side 19 to 06 after a lively clash.
We looked very sluggish in the opening quarter during which the Barrs rattled in a goal and two points and our lads were playing catch up for the remainder of the game.
Lack of match practice didn't help our cause and there has to be a lesson there. Killian Hogan, Paul Quirke, David Larkin and David McSweeney who looks to have finally gotten over his collar bone injury, were the best of our lads.
Next outing is a home game against Aghada next Sunday at 3p.m.

COLLEGE CORINTHIANS AFC

There was some cracking matches last weekend, with plenty of highs and lows for our various teams.
The Seniors dropped two valuable league points when they had to settled for a 2-2 draw with Glasheen. Willie O'Keeffe and Kieran O'Connor scored for Corinthians. While the Seniors were losing ground there was bad news also for our First Juniors who threw away a two goal lead and the points when they went 3-2 to Crofton Celtic.
Underage Section
The game of the weekend was undoubtedly the Under Eleven Cup replay between Douglas Corinthians and Ballincollig. The original match had ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time and Sundays replay was eagerly awaited.

The replay certainly did not disappoint as two evenly matched teams served up another very enjoyable Cup match with the honours eventually going to Ballincollig in a penalty shoot-out after another 2-2 draw. As in the first match Ballincollig took an early lead and when they increased their advantage ten minutes into the second half it looked as if the tie was over, but showing tremendous spirit, Corinthians fought back and two goals by Eoin McCarthy took the match into extra time. With both teams tiring visibly, neither side could manage the vital break through and after almost three hours of football the tie was decided on a penalty shoot-out with Ballincollig taking the honours on a 3-1 scoreline.
Though obviously disappointed Douglas Corinthians could hold their heads up high, they had contributed so much to two fine games, while it was essentially a team effort, Theo Cullinane, David O'Sullivan, David Meyler and Eoin McCarthy deserve special mention for their performances.
Our Under Eleven Premier Division side Corinthian Boys picked up another three league points after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Carrigaline. Craig Neville grabbed the vital goal while Terry O'Connell and Stephen White played well.
The Under 15's picked up three valuable league points when they got the better of Crosshaven on a 1-0 scoreline. Thomas Cotter scored the winning goal with a fine header and besides Thomas, Joe O'Donovan, Ricky O'Sullivan and Derek McClafferty played well.
Street Leagues
Registration for the Street Leagues takes place every Saturday morning in Corinthians Park. For the under 7's born in 1992 and 1993 and the under 8's born in 1991 registration takes place between 12noon and 1.30pm. While for the under nine to under eleven age group registration takes place between 10am and 11.30am on Saturday mornings.

CARRIGALINE BADMINTON CLUB

The Division 2 Mixed team continued on winning ways recently with comprehensive wins over Centenary and Ballinora. Both of these were away games with a 6-1 result recorded in both matches. This places the team at the top of the table with only three league matches remaining. The team: Adrian Furey, Alan Burrows, Tony Brooke, Gavin Jeffrey, Jo Fitzgerald, Mairead Ni Bheara, Barbara Jeffrey and Michelle Hayes.
It was a close call for the Division 4 Ladies team against Castlemagner at home last week. Castlemagner took the away match last month 3-1 but the Carrigaline Ladies fought back to win the home game by 2 aces. Also, the much awaited Riverstown rematch is coming up soon so if you're free, go along and support the Ladies. The Team: Idoia Murphy, Susan O'Reilly, Phil McCarthy and Bernie Hayes.
The Div 6 Ladies were celebrating this week having won all ten of their matches in the League. The Pfizers team cancelled the away rematch and conceded the points to Carrigaline who had beaten Pfizers 4-0 in the home match. We have great hopes for this team for the finals so the best of luck Ladies. The team: Maggie Morris, Angela Kelly, Patricia Nagle and Heather Hegarty.
In other news the second stage of the ladder competition is now underway with games starting on February 28 for four weeks. The Handicap Cup draws are taking place this week and details will be posted on the notice board. Coming up this weekend is the Brewster Muster Inter County Cup which will be held in Tipperary. From the club representing the Cork team are Shane Thompson, Adrian Furey and Mairead Ni Bheara. Good luck to them.

DOUGLAS RUGBY CLUB

Nobody in Fouglas RFC was shocked to have beaten Skibbereen in the junior cup on Sunday .The people who were shocked were people who have not seen Douglas play this season , and as the saying goes "wise men speak only of what they know". And so Douglas advanced to the next round of the junior cup. Douglas had a poor first half and trailed by seven points to three . The second half was however very much dominated by a merciless Douglas pack who showed little respect to their Skibbereen hosts . Three of the douglas tries were scored from driving forward play with Pete Seymore, Martin Pinfield and Noel Swanton scoring at close range;
John Quilter however had to run, and amazingly he ran straight. The score could have been a lot more but our kicker had a bad day, he will claim he was trying to make a game of it. Final score 7-23 Douglas go on to play Cobh pirates in the next round in Cobh on Sunday at 3pm.We would appreciate all of your support.

DOUGLAS HALL GIRLS U12

Douglas Hall - 1 V. Cobh -0

The girls won their way through to the semi-final of this cup over a strong Cobh side with a goal from super striker Aiofe Hynes in the 29th minute of the first half. This was a strong performance from the girls. They should have scored a 2nd when Karen O'Neill had a super shot saved by the Cobh goalkeeper who played well throughout the game. Cobh threw everything at the Douglas defence who stood firm as usual. Excellent performance from Mary Barrett, Aoife Hynes, Kate Delaney and Alison Kennedy

DOUGLAS GAA UNDER-AGE

U15A
Douglas and Mayfield met in the U15 A Grade League. Both teams had 100% record going in to this game. Douglas got off to a tremendous start with a Michael O'Mahony goal after two minutes. Colin Doyle gave Douglas a plentiful supply of the ball. Colin gave an exhibition of fielding and also distributed the ball very well. The Douglas forwards did not always make the best use of the ball and squandered many scoring chances. The half time score was 1-3 to 0-1 in favour of Douglas. Douglas continued to dominate the second half. A very vigilant David Dorney prevented Mayfield from scoring two certain goals. Padraig Greany was very impressive at wingback. Douglas tacked on five points whilst the Northsiders scored only a point in the second half. Final score Douglas 1-8 Mayfield 0-2.Patrick White and Raymond Keating also impressed.
U14 Section 11
Douglas' 2nd team proved no match for Mayfield first squad. The Douglas lads tried hard but were not in the same league as the opposition. Finbarr Enright, James Higgans and Alan McCarthy played well for Douglas.
U13A
Douglas and Mayfield played in A league at the laters venue. Douglas gave a very good performance. Two well-taken goals by full forward Tim Kellegher gave Douglas a good start. Douglas moved the ball very well and their distribution was first class. Final score Douglas 4-5 Mayfield 2-5. Michael O'Donoughue, Stephen Moylan and Philip Holland played well.
Under Section 11
Glanmire were much too good for Douglas 2nd squad. This was a complete miss match. Douglas worked hard and Cian Bray, Patrick Doyle, Sean O'Donoughue and Stephen Duggan were best.
U14 Challenge, Douglas V Moyle Rovers.
This was a good game of football in excellent conditions. The first half was very even, Moyle Rovers raced into a lead o 1-2 to a 0-1. Douglas fought back and led on a scoreline of 3-4 to 3-3. In the second half Douglas came more into the game with some nice patches of football. In defence Gary Hanrahan and Fionn O'Brien were excellent. Kevin Mulcahy, Ronan Stanton and Finbarr O'Donovan also played well. Final score Douglas 5-13 , Moyle Rovers 3-5.

DOUGLAS HALL AFC

Three of the four adult sides were winners last weekend, with good performances also from the Youths and Under 13's. The 13's advanced to the last 16 of the National Cup, and were full value for their 3-0 win.
The Seniors were very convincing 4-1 winners over Castleview in the League. Tom Houlihan, Derrick Bowen, Brian McSweeney and Kieran Olliffe were the scorers in a fine performance from the side. More of the same would be very welcome over the coming weeks.
Not to be outdone the MSL Juniors defeated UCC Academicals in the League. Here, the scorers in a 3-1 win were Barry O'Shea (2) and Mark O'Connell. Honourable mention also for Dave Kilgannon who made a fine stop from a UCC penalty.
The AUL Juniors also kept up their challenge for League honours. They defeated Dripsey Celtic 5-2, with goals from Willie Murphy, Brendan Crown, 2 apiece and Rory O'Sullivan. This keeps them well involved in the race for the league.
The Over 35's were disappointingly beaten 2-1 by Cobh Ramblers. The goal was scored with a terrific shot from Ian Fitzgerald. They are playing very inconsistently this season, and will need to find better form for the up coming Cup campaign.
The Youths were 3-2 winners over Ballincollig in the league. This match marked a return to form for the team, a welcome performance given that they have struggled for a couple of weeks. The scorers were Gerard O'Donovan (2), and Derrick Bowen.
The Under 17's suffered another disappointing defeat away to Bandon in the league. The final score was 5-2, which did our lads no justice. The scorers were Shane O'Donovan and Roger Barrett, and this puts some pressure on the side to get some results in the league.
The Under 15's suffered another league defeat, this time losing by the only goal to Blarney Utd. This also puts pressure on the side who have been dominating in most games up to now. This defeat means that no further slips will be possible in the run in for the league.
The 13's made the most of home advantage, beating Malahide Utd. 3-0 in the National Cup. They were on top throughout and, in truth, Malahide never really threatened. The 'Hall scorers were Ronan Stanton (2) and Robert Rose. Stephen Bermingham in goals earned a clean sheet, but had a relatively easy match. The lads now travel to Waterford Bohemians in the last 16 match, and a similar, or better performance will be needed. Good luck to all concerned.

NEMO RANGERS UNDER-AGE

The under-age football leagues took place again last weekend with Nemo playing three important matches on Saturday.
The U-13 A (Greenhills) faced strong opposition in the form of Farranee (Na Piarsigh) on a cold afternoon in Trabeg. Nemo began brightly with some excellent play at midfield by Graham Cummins who supplied his forwards with top quality posession which they, in turn, utilised to gain some valuable scores. Nemo won this game on a scoreline of 5-6 to 2-2 with Nemo's scores coming from Stephen Morgan (3-2), Graham Cummins (1-2), Andrew Morrissy (1-0), and Eoghan Hearne (0-1). The best for Nemo on the day were Roy Heaphy in goal, Kieth Donnellon and Raymond O' Keeffe in defence and Stephen Morgan with the hard-working Eoghan Hearne up front.
The U-13 A (Turners Cross) also played over the weekend against a very promising Blarney side. This was a keenly contested match with both sides going at it flat-out, without a quarter being given or asked. However it was Nemos ability to convert the hard fought possession into scores which decided the game on the day. An outstanding display by both Ricky Kenny and Shane Horgan, who scored 1-4 and 1-3 respectively, helped Nemo stay on top. Nemos' other scores came from Philip Hogan (0-4) and Davud Keary (2-0) which rounded off an excellent preformance for Turners Cross especially considering that Nemo have two teams playing in the top division of the league. Congratulations to all involved and everyone in the club wish ye the very best of luck.
Bellair , Nemos U-15's, played against a very strong Douglas side over the weekend and unfortunately were short a number of the first team selection. However Nemo put up a gutsy preformance and were within touching distance at half-time. Douglas took over in the second half and if not for the brilliance of Rory Gibbons in goal Nemo could have wound up being hammered. Also good for Nemo were John O' Keeffe and Paudie O' Shea. The final score of 1-11 to 0-3 shows that this team needs to keep pluging away and just to remind them that training is still on at 7:00pm in the club grounds every Tuesday night and that everyone is welcome.

DOUGLAS CAMOGIE CLUB

The Douglas Camogie Club Team of under 12 years played in Erins Own Invitation
Tournament Camogie Blitz in the Little Island complex on Sunday 19th February, 2000. They won all their matches to qualify for the semi-finals, on Saturday 27th February 2000.
The team met at the Douglas GAA club on the morning of the 27th at 9.30am high with excitement. The first match was played against Éire Og. The Éire Og girls were no match for the Douglas lassies. Douglas played a fine game with goals scored by Lavinia O'Mahony, Deirdre Murphy, Jenny O'Donovan and Emma Heffernan. The score board showed how well the full backs and goalie played not letting a ball go past them, well done to Louise Sheehan Shelly O'Donovan and Niamh O'Donovan(goalie)
Beating Éire Og the team went on to the semi finals to play Youghal and again Douglas won very comfortably. There was no stopping the girls now. Next step the final!! On to play Killeagh. The supporters/parents really got behind their team, down went the coffee mugs and up went the cheers as Douglas played like future Cork Stars with goals coming from the girls named above as well as Rachel O'Sullivan, Olivia Tobin and Sarah O'Regan. The team that played on both days had great support from the sub bench with most of the girls getting a run out. Audrey Flannagan, Jackie O'Donovan, Catherine Hussey, Zow Dunle and Nicola Bowler to name but a few. Thank you girls for the support you give to your team. The team returned to the GAA Club in a car convoy. Jerseys hung from all car windows and car horns could be heard through the village. Congratulations girls and continued success.
A big thank you to the team's trainer s Billy O'Sullivan, Eileen Murphy and Nuala Flannagan. Also to all the parents and supporters who came along on both days.
Circuit Training continues for the under 14 and under 16 in the indoor hall in the GAA Club, members will be told when training goes outdoors.
News Flash from the Camogie Club: Meeting for all Parents/Guardians of all members on Sunday March 5th at 11.45am. To be discussed from the Agenda is the Trip to Dublin and the fund raising on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Please make a big effort to attend.

DOUGLAS GYM CLUB NEWS

On the 12th of this month a team of 6 girls will be travelling to Dublin to compete for the title once again. They are Dara Kelleher, Sile Quinlan, Sara Callan, Katie Murphy, Martha Halbert and Chloe Hegarty. They face competition from the Four Corners of Ireland and will hope for success against each. Debbie McDonnell and Mairead O'Callaghan who have great experience in the competition coach the girls.
Douglas Gymnastics Club has an incredible record in the competition. Finishing first on no less than 5 occasions since its inaugural year in 1990 and placing every other year shows that consistency is one thing Douglas Gym Club does not lack.
On the 20th of February Douglas Gymnastics Club hosted the annual National Novice finals for girls. The competition was run over 2 days and was deemed a great success. In the U.9 section Niamh Scanlon placed third overall. The team consisting of the top 4 girls in the regional competition took the silver medal. Niamh Scanlon and Aimee O'Driscoll represented Douglas in the team.
In the U.12 section Cait Kelleher placed third and the team came away with the gold medal.
