DOUGLAS GAA SENIOR

Douglas Triumph To Take First Ever Premier Minor Title
Douglas and Bishopstown met last weekend in the Minor Football
League decider. It was Bishopstown who took the initiative,
scoring a goal and a point without reply in the first ten
minutes, their midfield and forwards on top form. The Douglas
mentors countered this by moving Fergal O’Sullivan to
midfield the result meant better distribution of the ball to the
two man Douglas full forward line. Mark Harrington led his direct
opponent a merry dance and in the process scored two fine points
while Barry Hanrahan and David O’Connor were very commanding.
Connor Alcock worked very hard in his quarter of the pitch.
Douglas managed to keep their opponents scoreless for the
remainder of the half while adding two more points to their own
tally to leave the sides level, 1-1 to 0-4 at the break.
The second half was a ding dong battle as both sides strove for
victory. Bishopstown took the lead twice only to be hauled back
by a determined Douglas outfit as both side were guilty of giving
away possesion. David Dorney’s handling in the goal was
outstanding. Douglas finally took the lead with ten minutes
remaining when Fergal O’Sullivan kicked a magnificent free
from an awkward angle near the sideline. Bishopstown continued to
attack but a well marshalled defence in which Frank Tobin played
the role of sweeper tremendously well, held tight. Paddy White
scored the insurance point sending Douglas to victory on a
scoreline of 0-8 to 1-3. Barry Hanrahan was presented with the
cup by Niall Keane, Chairman of the City Division, after the game.
This victory is very important and argues well for the future
considering the ages of this young team range between sixteen and
eighteen. Douglas now go on to contest the County Final.
Congratulations to the U-14’s who completed the Grand Slam
of football titles by adding the League title to the Championship
and County title.
The U-16 Football Final will go ahead next weekend against
Ballincollig……no venue or time as yet.

DOUGLAS GAA UNDERAGE

Douglas Do The Treble. Douglas 2-10 Mayfield 1-9
Douglas met Mayfield in the Under 14 league final last weekend.
Mayfield were first to settle scoring a point but Douglas were
soon to equalise through Philip Holland. Both teams played well
but it was Douglas who got the vital scores. A great goal by
David Kilcummins just before half time saw Douglas lead at the
break by 1-3 to 0-4. In the second half it was Mayfield who took
the game to Douglas, scoring a goal to Douglas’ point,
levelling the score. From the resulting kick out, the ball broke
to Philip Holland in midfield who soloed up the field before
passing to Ronan O’Murchú who blasted the ball to the back
of the net. Points from Gavin Griffin and Stephen Moylan saw
Douglas lift the trophy. This was a great team performance, doing
themselves proud by winning all three competitions in the Under
14 Grade…..Championship, League and County Titles.
We would like to wish Daniel O’Leary who was injured in a
recent game, a speedy recovery and we hope to see you back soon.
Under 15 Football.
Douglas Qualify for Under 15 Final. Douglas 1-8 Barrs 0-5
The match against the Barrs was always going to be a tough game
with the usual rivalry between the teams. From Under 13 on up
these two teams always had a good battle on the pitch. D. O’Sullivan
in goal, kept the Douglas backline on their toes and when the
Barrs pressed hard, he saved a penalty. Jonathan Lane and Colm O’Sullivan
were playing extremely well while up front the Douglas forwards
were doing the business, scoring some excellent points. Fionn O’Brien
and Stephen Bermingham on top form on the forward line. We wish
them all the best in the final.

Club Personality.
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy is one of the hardest working club members on behalf
of the Under Age Section. Eddie is currently Club Development
Officer and doing a tremendous job. He has brought the school
team from no where to win numerous Scaith na Scoile Trophies and
the knock on effect is now proving a great success on the club
front. Eddie is now also secretary of the adult section of the
club but, I think his heart is really with the under age section.
DOUGLAS RUGBY CLUB

It was back to the all important business of the league last
weekend for both Douglas teams. In the morning game Douglas lined
out against Cork Con. The Douglas pack saw newcomer, Martin
Brennan line out for his first game in number of years and
performed very well on the day. Pat Holland made a welcome return
at wing forward joined by Paudie Kelleher and Ian Vaughan. This
was always going to be a tough game eventhough the forwards were
well and truly a good match for the Con pack. Unfortunately
errors in the backs allowed the opposition come through on a
number of occasions during the game to score a couple of tries.
Despite another cameo appearance by Donal Delaney and veteran
leader Bob Costigan their great efforts didn’t make the
desired impact. So lads for the next game we all hope that things
will be brighter (i.e. at least appear to be TACKLING anyway lads!!!!).
In our Junior1 game it was Kanturks turn to visit our home ground
at Moneygourney. This game couldn’t be classified as a
spectacle of high scoring even though we drew, knowing that we
should have put the game to bed early in the first half. Willie
Lehane was to score the only penalty score on the day in the 18th
minute of the second half. Neil Patterson made some good
decisions partnered by the versatile, Noel Swanton while Jon
“Valley Boy” Baker made several try saving tackles
helped by Dave Callaghan. A special mention for Martin Pinfield (
who was bitterly complaining that he hasn’t been mentioned
lately) who came on for the dogged Jonathan Payne. Scrum Half,
Colin Corkery was passing well again while under pressure as the
game went from end to end with neither team able to break down
the others defence. Lots of tackles put in by Ciarán Cleary,
Connor Tolan and Terry ‘The Giant’ McCarthy kept them
busy for the whole game while Derry McCarthy caught some great
balls and gained valuable ground several times throughout the
game. Anthony Gilbert has promised myself personally that he will
play better next Sunday after his vision is sorted out this week.
So lads a better performance will be desired by all next week !

SUNDAYS WELL RUGBY CLUB
Results for last weekend.
Under 18’s won their league match against Fermoy 58-11. Best
for Sundays Well were Eamonn Murphy and William McCarthy.
Under 16’s won their league match against Mallow 22-0. Try
scorers on the day were, Brian Hickey, Peter O'’ahony,
Darren Twomey and John Lee.
Under 13’s won their match against PBC.
Under 12’s won their game against Crosshaven.
Under 8/9/10/11’s won and lost a series of friendlies
against Clonakilty on Saturday morning. All teams represented
themselves well and a good morning rugby was had by all.

NEMO RANGERS
Seniors Retain Munster Title
Nemo retained the Munster Club Football title against Tipperary
champions Fethard in Fermoy last Sunday.
Nemo got off to a great start scoring a goal and a point within
the first six minutes, the goal coming from corner-forward Alan
Cronin. Fethard, playing with the breeze, responded well and shot
over three unanswered points to leave the scores 1-1 to 0-3 after
ten minutes. Colin Corkery scored his second point after thirteen
minutes increasing Nemo’s lead to two points. Both sides
swapped points leaving the scores 1-4 to 0-5 after twenty-five
minutes. Two more points were added by the Capwell side before
the break, one each from Dylan Mehigan and Joe Kavanagh. The
score at halftime read 1-6 to 0-5. Fethard were first off the
mark in the second half with an early point. Then Joe Kavanagh
and Colin Corkery picked off points to help Nemo to a 1-9 to 0-6
lead with fifteen minutes remaining. Fethard pressed forward and
four points from their attack left only a goal between the teams
as the match entered the final few minutes. A fisted point from
Joe Kavanagh wrapped it up for the Cork champions and Nemo went
on to win 1-11 to 0-10. Best for Nemo were Joe Kavanagh, Kevin
Cahill, Gary Murphy, Colin Corkery, Mick Daly, Alan Cronin and
Maurice McCarthy. Nemo now progress to the All-Ireland semifinal
where they play Mayo and Connacht champions Charlestown.
U-11 Football Blitz Semifinal:
Nemo played St. Vincent’s in the semifinal of the U-11 blitz
last Saturday. We played well in the first half and with our two
midfielders as well as our halfbacks on top we went in at the
break 2-4 to 0-2. In the second half Vincent’s came back
into the game and with three minutes to go we only led by a point.
Vincent’s then got a goal and went on to win 2-7 to 2-5.
Best for Nemo were Paul Cahill in goal, Brian O’Hara, Glen
Creedon, Michael O’Keeffe and Ronan Barry.
The U-15s defeated St. Vincent’s in the semifinal of the
football league last Saturday. All the team played
well.

COLLEGE CORINTHIANS AFC
There was great disappointment for the Corinthians Senior Team
last Sunday when they were beaten 4-0 by Greystones in the replay
of their first round FAI Senior Cup clash. The sides had drawn 0-0
in Cork the previous week and hopes were high that the vastly
experienced Corinthians side would come out on top on Sunday.
However it was not to be and three goals in a seven minute spell
early in the second half did the damage.
Manager, Fergus McDaid and his players will now have to turn
their attention to the defence of their Munster Senior League
Title and even though bitterly disappointed by the weekends
result, they can take great consolation from the fact that last
season following a similar disappointment, they put together a
long unbeaten run and finished the season as Munster Senior
League Champions.
Schoolboy Section
It was a mixed weekend on the Schoolboy front with Corinthian
Boys Under 12 and Under 14 teams maintaining their unbeaten
records, while our Under 16 side picked up three useful league
points when they defeated Avondale 4-2. However there was
disappointment for Douglas Corinthians Under 14's and Corinthians
United Under 12's who were knocked out of the local cup.
Under 12
Corinthian Boys progressed to the third round of the local cup
with a comfortable 4-0 away victory over Mayfield United. Jamie
Drennan with a fine hat-trick and Conor O'Reilly were on the
scoresheet for Corinthians. Stephen Good, Theo Cullinane and Ian
Turner turning in top class performances.
Our second Under 12 side, Corinthians United found Rockmount too
hot to handle in an Under 12 Premier League clash going down by
four goals to nil. Rockmount were just too strong for our lads
who nevertheless gave it their best shot. Brennan Knight, Colm
O'Driscoll and Stephen Murphy played well for Corinthians.
Under 14
Corinthian Boys moved smoothly through to the fourth round of the
National Cup with a very comfortable victory over Castlebridge
Celtic. Castlebridge battled bravely throughout against their
more experienced opponents and were not helped by the loss of
their goalkeeper through injury after 20 minutes. Stephen Moylan,
Gary Coughlan, Ian Nolan, Ricky Kenny, Eoghan Hearne, Keith
Donalan, Graham Cummins and Shane Horgan were all on the
scoresheet for Corinthians while Alan Barry, Eoin Cotter and
Thomas O'Connor played well.
Life was not so good for our second Under 14 team Douglas
Corinthians who went out of the local cup when they went down 5-0
to higher ranked Kilreen Celtic. It was tough going for our lads
who despite a brave first half performance just could not match
their very skilful opponents. Richard Walsh, Frank Carley and
Ronan O'Murachu did well for Corinthians on the day.
Under 16
Despite falling behind early in the first half our Under 16's
recovered well and playing their best football of the season they
deservedly took the spoils against Avondale winning 4-2. Seamus
Clinch, John Carroll, Richard Arnup and Mark Maher were on the
scoresheet for Corinthians, while Neil Burke, Gary Drennan and
Peter Moreland turned in fine performances.
Street Leagues
Last Saturday saw the start of this years Winter Street Leagues
for the Under Seven age group. This year the league which
features eight teams will run until early February with games
taking place on the Clubs all-weather pitch. Everyone seemed to
enjoy the first series of matches last Saturday, certainly at
this level winning and losing is not important just simply taking
part and having some fun. Full details of the teams taking part,

UK Trip
Next year the Club will once again take two teams to Liverpool
over the Easter period for an International Soccer Tournament.
Douglas Corinthians one of our two Under 12 Premier teams and
Corinthian Boys currently top of the Under 11 Premier Division
will travel to Liverpool for what promises to be a trip of a
lifetime. Besides the soccer tournament, which includes teams
from all over the UK and Ireland the touring party will also take
in the English Premier League Clash between Everton and Bolton.
The Schoolboy section is currently putting in place an Organising
and Fundraising Committee which will undoubtedly be looking for
the support of all our parents and Club Members in the coming
weeks as they put in place their plans for the trip.
DOUGLAS HALL AFC
Last weekend was not our most successful,
although the Youths and Under 16s did bring some cheer to the
club. The Seniors suffered a bad defeat, while the AUL Juniors
experienced mixed fortunes in their two league fixtures.
The Seniors travelled to Everton Park for the Munster Senior Cup
tie against Everton, and returned chastened, following a 4-1
hiding. They never got going at all and always played second
fiddle to an Everton side bent on revenge following our opening
day victory in the league. Everton deservedly led 3-0 at the
break and the 'Hall never really threatened a comeback. Brian
McSweeney netted the 'Hall's goal late in the game. A significant
improvement will be required for next Sunday's Intermediate Cup
tie against Rockmount in Whitechurch. The 'Hall are really going
into the lions' den for this fixture, Rockmount have a very
impressive pedigree in the Intermediate Cup and will be strongly
fancied to progress. However, on their day, the 'Hall have proved
to be a match for anyone and will travel not without strong hopes
and ambitions to advance.
The AUL Juniors had two league matches in three days. They
travelled to the Mardyke on last Thursday night to play the UCC
side who had beaten them at home the previous Sunday. Revelling
in the floodlit surroundings, the 'Hall were very good value for
their 1-0 win. Rory O'Sullivan, who has built up an impressive
goal tally so far this season was the 'Hall scorer,
while David Long was very sound in goals. On Saturday, however,
they came unstuck, going down 3-1 against Killeady Celtic. This
defeat was a severe dent in their league ambitions. The 'Hall
scorer was O'Sullivan, again, who now has 15 goals for the season
to date.
The Youths had a difficult away league fixture against Kilreen
Celtic and battled hard for a 1-1 draw. They were missing a
number of regulars, but the players who deputised were splendid
performers on the day. The scorer was Robert Heffernan, who
converted a Stephen Barry cross to cancel out Kilreen's opener.
The Under 16's had a cracking Local Cup match against
Ballincollig. The match swung in both directions at different
times, with a draw a fair result after Extra Time. The 'Hall
scorers were regular marksmen Christy O'Shea and Stephen Barry.

Douglas Hall 3-2 Wilton
Title favourites Wilton were brought down to earth with a bang on
Sunday when they travelled to Douglas Hall.
Douglas showed a lot of character and work hard for this win.
Gemma Crowley pulled off some magnificent saves and Linda Horgan
was rock solid in defence. She was helped in no small way by Mary
Barrett, Kate Delaney and Jackie Horgan. Loise Martin played out
of her skin on the right with great attacking and defensive play.
She Played her part in the first two goals, which were superbly
finished by Cynthia. But twice Douglas were pegged back. However
they kept plugging away at Wilton and with five minutes to go
Cynthia played a one two with Caroline Hawkes on the edge of the
box and then placed the ball in the corner of the net too claim
her hat trick and secure a memorable win.

DOUGLAS CAMOGIE CLUB
Douglas 4-0 Eire óg 2-0
The game was played in perfect conditions.Support was plentiful
and the girls gave a wonderful display of Camogie and as usual
all gave their all in the first half.Yet they came out in the
second half and had moved up a gear deservedly they came out the
winners .It is becoming increasingly difficult to pick out the
best players but Valerie Downey was excellent Fiona O Donovan
cleared great ball Louise O Regan kept popping up all over the
field.Ciara Kennefick worked tremendously in the forward line and
Niamh O Donovan again pulled off some wonderful saves . Our
scorers were Laura Walsh,Michelle ODonovan,Deirdre Murphy and
Louise O Regan.Semi-final to be played next Sunday December 2nd

Under 11
The under 11 indoor Christmas league continued last Saturday with
Cork v Tipp and Clare v Waterford.
In the first game Cork overcame the challenge of Tipp in a very
close game .Best for Cork were Valerie Olden,Deirdre Cotter and Máire
O'Mahony best for Tipp were Aideen Fitton,Una Dunphy and Louise
Jordan.The second game between Clare v Waterford was also a very
close with Clare emerging victorious.Best for Clare were Cieanna
O'Driscoll,Aileen O'Donovan and Emma Jordan while Clodagh Barry
,Moira O'Donovan ,Emma Colgan stared for Waterford .Games
continue next Saturday with Cork v Clare and Tipp v Waterford.
