Douglas lose by a point to Kerins O'Rahilys in Senior Football

Douglas lost the opening round of the Munster Club Senior football league in Tralee on a scoreline of 0-6 to 1-6. Whilst it is always disappointing to lose the new manager Paul Ahern was generally pleased with the overall performance. Peter Murphy was the goal scorer whilst Donal Meade kicked a couple of fine points. At mid-field Ronan McCarthy and Gary McLoughlin performed well. Douglas led 1-3 to 0-5 at the interval.
The Tralee side upped its performance in the second half Douglas struggled to keep in touch. O'Rahilys went three points up. Douglas rallied and had a few chances to draw level but time ran out and the Kerry lads held on for victory on a scoreline of 0-10 to 1-6. Others to impress were David McSweeney, Ronan Wade and Brian Boyle.
The next three games are at home. The next game is on Sunday against Bishopstown. Clonmel Commercials will be visitors to Douglas the following Sunday. On February 10th (Saturday) Eire Óg, Ennis will provide the opposition.

The AGM took place on Thursday night last. A G M 's conventions can be very 'damp squibs'. This meeting may have started that way but there was a lot of lively debate as the evening progressed.
There was constructive talk from the floor as to the future direction the club should take on the playing fields. One would hope that these views will be taken on board and acted upon.
Der O'Regan stepped down after a 2-year term as Chairman. He was complimented on all the hard work he had done during that period and warmly applauded by the very large attendance for his efforts.

COLLEGE CORINTHIANS AFC

The bad weather of last weekend played havoc with the fixture list with only two schoolboys league games surviving. However, the under 7's street leagues was not affected and as usual the games produced some fine matches.
Under 7's Street Leagues
While last weekend's matches saw Real Madrid and Everton maintain their fine form it was also nice to see some of the teams lower down the league recording long awaited victories. This was certainly the case for Arsenal who found form with a vengence when they destroyed Manchester United by 8-0. Paul Higginbottom, Harry McCarthy, David Twomey and Shane McAulliffe were the pick of a very fine Arsenal team performance. It was certainly not Manchester Uniteds day as earlier they had lost a close contest 2-1 to Liverpool. The defeats were not the fault of Dean O' Sullivan, James O'Shea, Darragh O'Leary and Brian Cooney who impressed in both games. For Liverpool regular marksman Evan Healy McGrath, David O'Sullivan and Gus Lewis turned in fine performances.

After a slow start to the league, Chelsea are now in top form and they recorded two excellent victories 3-1 against Cork City and followed up with a 6-2 victory over Barcelona. Against Barcelona Declan Malone, Adam Palmer, Brian O'Mahony and Eoin Burke stood out,. while against Cork City Sean English and Richard Lynch did well. Cork City with James Burke, Art Kelleher and Aidan Devine to the fore had earlier lost out 1-0 to Everton.

With only one series of league matches left to play we will know the line up for the semi-finals after next weeks action.

Portmarknock AFC
Dublin Schoolboys League side Portmarnock, were very welcome visitors to Cork last weekend when they travelled to take on our Under 12 side Corinthians Boys in a friendly. Corinthians had travelled to Dublin in early November and at the time Portmarknock gave a commitment that they would come to Cork in the new year. True to their words and despite the inclement weather they travelled to Cork last weekend. They certainly proved very popular visitors.

The match itself, was very enjoyable with Portmarknock showing some nice touches early on and playing some good football on the slippery surface, however against the run of play Richard O'Donovan put Corinthians ahead after 15 minutes. Gaining in confidence from the goal Corinthians began to dominate and it was no surpirse when David Meyler added a second goal just before half time. A fine individual effort by Jamie Drennan made it three with 15 mins. remaining and there was no way back for Portmarknock. Goalkeeper David Bevan, Ian Turner and Colin Hammond impressed for Corinthians.

Despite the defeat Portmarknock seemed to thoroughly enjoy their visit to Cork and they left with an invitation to Corinthians Under 9, 10 and 11 sides to travel to Dublin over the next few months to take on their Portmarknock counterparts.

Schoolboys League
Corinthian Boys had earlier taken on Greenwood in an Under 12 Cup match and had emerged comfortable winners on a 7-0 scoreline. Jamie Drennan (2), David Meyler, Eddie McWhinney, Patrick O'Brien, Ian Turner were on the scoresheet for Corinthians.

Our second Under 12 side Corinthians United were also in action over the weekend and they played out 2-2 draw with Mayfield United. Killian O'Challicain and William O'Connor were on the scoresheet for Corinthians and they had top class performers in Gavin Dempsey, goalkeeper Danny Horgan and Donal O'Callaghan.

UK Trip
Preparations are beginning in earnest for this years trip to Liverpool over the Easter weekend by our Under 11 Premier Division side Corinthian Boys and Under 12 Premier Division side Corinthians United. The fundraising committee has been put in place and a schedule of events has been drawn up which includes a Golf Classic, Soccer Mrathon and Music Table Quiz. The exact dates for these events will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Douglas U-16 B overcome Nemo A to qualify for Final.
Douglas and Nemo met in the semi-final of the league. Nemo would have been fovourites considering this is their only team at this grade. One would have to say that both teams are to be congratulated for playing to the standard displayed considering that there were very high winds and a lot of rain fell.
Nemo Played into the wind and led 0-4 to 01 after fifteen minutes. Points from David O'Connor (2), J. Barrett (1) brought the sides level. Nemo replied with a goal and a point Vincent Kiely scored 1-1 to bring the sides level at the interval.
At this stage the Douglas selectors made a number of positional and personnel changes. The main change was the placing of Brian T. O'Callaghan on Nemo's best forward. Brian not only snuffed out the threat of his direct opponent but he gave an outstanding performance. Douglas showed great determination and commitment the second half. A second goal by David O'Connor saw Douglas lead by three points. The South Douglas road outfit equalised. In a hectic finish Ian O'Regan scored the winning point. Beside those mentioned others to impress were Ronan Griffin, Finbarr O'Donovan. Overall one would have to say it was a great squad performance. Douglas 2-8 Nemo 2-7.

The weather proved to be the spoilsport last weekend as it prevented the senior footballers game against Clonmel Commercials going ahead. See club notice board for next weeks fixture which is a home match. The minors will field two teams in both hurling and football for the coming year. It has not yet been finalised but it is hoped that the first team in both hurling and football will compete in County Premier leagues.
The second teams will be known as development squads and will participate in the city leagues. It is proposed to start the football next weekend.
The premier hurling selectors are Pat Harrington, Vincent Kelly, Brendan Keating and Finbarr Murphy.
The premier football selectors are Joe O'Sullivan, Der O'Regan and Nick Heffernan.
Development squad football selectors are Finbarr Bermingham, John Hunt and Pat Harrington.
Development squad hurling selectors are John Grimes, Sam Collins, Pat O'Connor, Barry Lyons, John Foley and Joe Barry Jnr.
The term development squad was thought to be an appropriate name as it is proposed to to put a lot of time into developing the players skills.

DOUGLAS CAMOGIE CLUB

Douglas under 12s recently retained their county title on a glorious Saturday afternoon in Ballinhassig. Douglas opened the scoring with a point by Moire O Donovan, which was followed by two well-taken goals from Captain Rachel O Sullivan and Aileen O Donovan. After the break Eire óg emerged more determined then ever they came up against the Douglas midfield pairing of Hilary O Connor and Niamh O Donovan who were in sparkling form. Try as they might Eire óg's forwards could not break down a strong Douglas backline which included Ashling Barret, Ailish Desmond and Cliona Conway in goal who made several impressive saves at vital times. Douglas moved Emma Heffernan to full forward after the break and with that 2 goals were in the back of the net. Try as they might Eire óg could not cope with a rampant Niamh O Donovan in the half forward line who weighted in with a goal of her own and a couple of points. Douglas took a deserved 2nd County title in a row. Everyone on the day gave 110% including our subs who played a vital part in this season campaign. The final score was Douglas 6-4 to Eire óg 0-1. The mentors, players and Club would like to thank all the Parents for their support and we hope to see you again in the coming season. We would also like to thank Lifestyle in Douglas Shopping Center for their sponsorship.
Sunday 4th Nov 11.00a.m. Douglas 6-03 Na Piarsaigh 1-01
The match was played on a beautiful morning .Na Piarsaigh got off to a great start scoring a goal and a point. However the Douglas girls took over and dominated the field. Everyone gave 100% and support and encouragement they gave to one another throughout the match was incredible. Helen O Mahony was superb in the middle of the field and Niamh O Donovan made some brilliant saves. Our goal scorers were Jenny O Donovan, Laura Walsh, Deirdre Murphy Rachel O Sullivan, Ciara Kennefick who also scored a point from an impossible angle. MichelleO Donovan scored a point from a well-struck 45yard free. We now meet Eire óg in the quarterfinals.

Séandun League Final 11th Nov
On Sunday the under U-13 Camogie team played Glen Rovers in the final of the Séandun league. This was a trilling match to watch and Douglas emerged worthy winners on a score line of 4-2 to 1-0, bringing the trophy to Douglas for the first time. Led by captain,Sarah O Regan this was a team effort with every girl playing her part. The first score, a point, came from a free taken by ace centre forward Jenny O'Donovan. With mid-fielders Hilary O Connor and Deirdre Murphy on form there was a constant supply of ball to the forwards who all did well, in particular Lavinia O'Mahony who scored a lovely goal. Left corner forward, Olivia Tobin was definitely the hero of the hour with three spectacular goals. In defence nothing passed Audrey Flanagan and Eilish Desmond gave another fine performance. Niamh O Donovan in goal made a vital save early in the second half, which prevented the Glen from getting back into the game. These groups of girls have trained very hard all year and Douglas Camogie Club is very proud of them.
Douglas has made a clean sweep of 11,12, 13 grades.
On Friday last 25th January Douglas Camogie Club held their annual victory dinner in the club pavilion. Presentation of medals was made to under 11 and under 13 Seandun league winners and to under 14 County Championship winners. Chairperson Tina Sheehan congratulated the various teams for their tremendous victories for the last year and thanked the coaches and mentors of the teams for their hard work and commitment to make this success possible. Presentations were also made to players who represented Seandun in under 15 and senior level. Tina paid special tribute and presentations to Fiona O'Donovan and Amanda O'Regan who played with Cork and she hoped all the other younger players would take inspiration from them. A disco followed this and a great night was had by all. We would like to thank the very hard working social committee who put a lot of hard work to make this a great success. Which I am sure everyone would agree was. As the New Year begins we can only go forward now and everyone is looking forward to the challenge.
