Giselle - November 2007 - Press Release

Cork City Ballet Announces its first full length production - Giselle

For its Winter Season at the Cork Opera House, Cork City Ballet presents the full-length ballet Giselle – the poignant and tragic love story about a peasant girl who dies and comes back from the dead to save her lover.  The show opens Wednesday 21st November and will run for four performances only.

The title role of Giselle - the most celebrated ballet of the romantic era - will be danced by Ireland’s prima ballerina Monica Loughman, and she will be partnered by the Russian ballet star Robert Gabdullin – a principal dancer at the Perm State Ballet.  Leading ballerina Chika Temma who has danced at the famous Maryinski (Kirov) Theatre in St. Petersburg will also be dancing one of the principal roles along with soloists and the full corps de ballet from Cork City Ballet.

Directed by the company’s Artistic Director Alan Foley, this production of Giselle will be reproduced for Cork City Ballet by Yuri Demakov who trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow.  It promises to enthral audiences with the symphonic beauty of the original choreography of Marius Petipa, Jean Corelli, and Jules Perrot, combined with stunning new costumes made at the Kirov theatre in Russia.

Speaking at the recent launch of this production, Artistic Director Alan Foley said, "I am delighted that Giselle, with its beautiful score, and exacting choreography, is the first full-length ballet that the company has chosen to present. We at Cork City Ballet (as one of only two professional ballet companies in Ireland presenting the full-length classics) are very proud to continue the legacy of the great Joan Denise Moriarty in this city”.
