Cork City
Ballet - The Story So Far By Alan Foley. Starting a ballet company in Ireland, where public funding can, at best, be patchy and where there was not a large ready-made audience for dance, requires tenacity, optimism, tremendous energy and an unusual capacity for hard work. Alan Foley possesses all these attributes, allied also to a generosity of spirit, as he warmly acknowledges all those who contributed to his career in a manner which is rare for someone who has achieved success. Since founding Cork City Ballet in 1991, Foley has not only directed the company, but taught, choreographed, produced and was, until last year, also its principal male dancer. Happily, CCB - at 17 years old - is a well established company with a varied repertoire of 19th century classics and works made for them, attracting international guest artistes and touring to other Irish cities a well as playing two seasons a year in Cork. |
It
is a good time to look back, now the company is going from success to
success. This attractively laid-out book is primarily a
fascinating, annotated photo-album, which admirers of the company will
wish to own. In the opening essay Foley outlines the story of the
company from its earliest days to the present, as well as discussing his
own training. It will be interesting to follow the continuing
development of CCB as it edges towards its third decade of life.
