YOUTHS INTER - PROVINCIAL COMPETITION 2005 |
---|
This year’s championships were held on 15th & 16th
January in Ulster based out of Portrush. This competition was also
a qualifier for the Youth International shore teams. The U/16’s will
travel to Holyhead in Wales to compete in the Home Internationals in
August. The World Youths Championships has not yet been confirmed. They
are due to be held in Egypt in September but so far no confirmation of the
event has been received.
At the moment the I.F.S.A. can not make a decision as to whether or
not the U/21 team will travel. The weekend saw a good turnout of anglers. In both U/16’s and U/21’s Ulster, Leinster and Munster entered teams. The event started with the draw for pegs on Friday night when all teams had arrived. The general feeling was that it was going to be a tough weekend for all competitors. The main priority was to avoid blanking. It was felt the Ulster teams on home ground would have advantage but before and during the competition both the stewards and the Ulster anglers sportingly disclosed the best methods that worked on each beach. Leinster had a very experienced U/21’s team with all team members being experienced international anglers. Their U/16’s were all newcomers to interprovincial competition. Munster like Leinster had a very inexperienced U/16’s team and their U/21’s team had only 3 anglers competing. Even though 2 of them were experienced international anglers they were at a severe disadvantage. On Saturday morning Jade Kinsella from Munster landed a flounder of 43cm and this was the longest fish of the competition so far. However on Saturday night she improved on this by landing a flounder of 46cm which was estimated to be an Irish specimen. Like all other fish landed it was returned alive to the water.

PORTSTEWART
The first session was on Saturday morning on Portsteward beach. As
predicted fishing was tough with no big catches. In U/21’s section a
total of 10 fish that reached the measurement of 18cm were landed.
Leinster got off to a good start with 4 of their 5 anglers weighing in.
This put them in 1st place. Munster had 3 out of 3 anglers
weighing in and they took 2nd place. Ulster had a disastrous
first session with all their anglers blanking. Individual placings, 1st.

PORTRUSH The
second session was on Saturday night on East Strand, Portrush. Being a
night competition fishing was much better. The stewards had their work cut
out trying to keep up with the amount of fish the anglers were catching.

with all anglers weighing in. Leinster pushed further ahead
with another win. Ulster came second closing the gap on Munster
who finished third.

BENONE STRAND The final session was Sunday morning on Benone Strand. It was a fresh and sunny day and this brought a lot of people on to the beach. The beach was unusually busy for January but this did not deter the anglers. In the individual competition the main aim was not to blank. The results at this stage were so tight in both age groups that any angler weighing in could make the International team. In the U/21’s 11 fish were caught with only 7 anglers weighing in. The third session winner was Ulster with 3 anglers weighing in. 2nd. was Leinster with 2 anglers weighing in. 3rd. Munster with 2 anglers weighing in. It was obvious that Leinster had won U/21’s championship but results were so tight between the other provinces that they could not predict who was second. . Individual placings. 1st. Jonathon Costello, Leinster, 3 fish. 2nd. Sam McDowell, Ulster, 2 fish. 3rd. Graham Bell, Ulster, 8 fish.
The biggest cheer of the day was for Robert
Wilson, Ulster who was leading going into the last session and
with 10 minutes to go stopped a blank by catching a fine Turbot and
guaranteed himself a place on the Irish U/16’s team. U/16’s winner
this session was Leinster with 5 anglers weighing in.
2nd. Munster with 2 anglers weighing in, 3rd.
Ulster with 2 anglers weighing in.
