Cabaret Act II
MARRIED (reprise)
SCHULTZ
And the old despair
That was often there
Suddenly ceases to be
For you wake one day,
Look around and say:
"Somebody wonderful married...
(a brick is thrown through the window)
It is nothing! Children on their way to school.
Mischievous children! Nothing more! I assure you!
School children. Young and full of mischief. You understand?
IF YOU COULD SEE HER
EMCEE (appearing with a gorilla)
I know what you're thinking:
You wonder why I chose her
Out of all the ladies in the world.
That's just a first impression,
What good's a first impression?
If you knew her like I do
It would change your point of view.
If you could see her through my eyes,
You wouldn't wonder at all.
If you could see her through my eyes
I guarantee you fall (like I did)
When we're in public together
I hear society moan.
But if you could see her through my eyes
Maybe they'd leave us alone.
(There you are my Liebling. Your favourite)
How can I speak of her virtues?
I don't know where to begin.
She's clever, she's smart, she reads music
She doesn't smoke or drink gin (like I do)
Yet, when we're walking together
They sneer if I'm holding her hand,
But if they could see her through my eyes
Maybe they'd all understand.
(they dance)
Why can't they leave us alone?
(spoken)
Meine Damen und Herren, Mesdames et Messieurs,
Ladies and Gentlemen-
Is it a crime to fall in love?
Can we ever tell where the heart truly leads us?
All we are asking is eine bisschen Verstandnis-
A little understanding-
Why can't 'leben und leben lassen'?
'Live and let live'...
I understand your abjection,
I grant you the problem's no small.
But if you could see her through my eyes...
She wouldn't look Jewish at all.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO
CLIFF (spoken)
Fraulein Schneider, you can't give up that way!
FRAULEIN SCHNEIDER (spoken)
Oh, yes! I can. That is easy to say! Easy for you.
Fight! And if you fail... What does it matter?
You pack your belongings. You move to Paris.
And if you do not like Paris- where? It is easy for you.
But if you were me...
With time rushing by,
What would you do?
With the clock running down,
What would you do?
The young always have the cure,
Being brave, being sure
And free.
But imagine if you were me.
Alone like me,
And this is the only world I know.
Some rooms to let.
The sum of a lifetime, even so.
I'll take your advice.
What would you do?
Would you pay the price?
What would you do?
Suppose simply keeping still
Means you manage until
The end?
What would you do?
My brave, young friend?
Grown old like me,
With neither the will nor wish to run.
Grown tired like me,
Who hurries for bed when day is done.
Grown wise like me,
Who isn't at war with anyone,
Not anyone!
With a storm in the wind,
What would you do?
Suppose you're on frightened voice
Being told what the choice
Must be,
Go on, tell me,
I will listen.
What would you do
If you
Were me?
I DON'T CARE MUCH
EMCEE
I don't care much,
Go or stay.
I don't care very much
Either way.
Hearts grow hard
On a windy street.
Lips grow cold
With the rent to meet.
So if you kiss me,
If we touch,
Warning's fair,
I don't care
Very much.
I don't care much,
Go or stay.
I don't care very much
Either way.
Words sound false
When you're coats too thin.
Feet don't waltz
When the roof caves in.
So if you kiss me,
If we touch,
Warning's fair,
I don't care very much.
CABARET
SALLY
What good is sitting alone
In you room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.
Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
Time for a holiday.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.
Come taste the wine,
Come hear the band.
Come blow a horn,
Start celebrating;
Right this way,
Your table's waiting.
No use permitting
Some prophet of doom
To wipe every smile away.
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret!
I used to have a girlfriend
Known as Elsie,
With whom I shared
Four sordid rooms in Chelsea
She wasn't what you'd call
A blushing flower...
As a matter of fact
She rented by the hour.
The day she died the neighbours
Came to snicker:
"Well, that's what comes
From too much pills and liquor."
But when I saw her laid out like a Queen,
She was the happiest... corpse...
I'd ever seen.
I think of Elsie to this very day.
I remember how she'd turn to me and say:
"What good is sitting alone
In you room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.
Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
Time for a holiday.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret."
And as for me,
I made my mind up, back in Chelsea,
When I go, I'm going like Elsie.
Start by admitting,
From cradle to tomb
Isn't that a long a stay.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Only a Cabaret, old chum
And I love a Cabaret.
FINALE
LOUDSPEAKER VOICE (spoken)
Lezte Ansage! Berlin-Paris Express abfahrt, vier Uhr,
Bahnsteig siebzehn. All'einsteigen, bitte! Letze Ansage!
(CLIFF is alone in a railroad compartment. A customs officer played by the EMCEE enters.)
EMCEE/CUSTOMS OFFICIAL
Deustche Grenzkontrolle. Ihren Pass, bitte.
I hope you have enjoyed your stay in Germany, Mr. Bradshaw.
And you will return again soon.
CLIFF
It's not very likely.
EMCEE/CUSTOMS OFFICIAL
You did not find our country beautiful?
CLIFF
Yes. I found it beautiful.
EMCEE/CUSTOMS OFFICIAL
A good journey, sir.
CLIFF (spoken)
There was a Cabaret
and there was a Master of Ceremonies
and there was a city called Berlin
in a country called Germany.
It was the end of the world...
and I was dancing with Sally Bowles
and we were both fast asleep...
Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome.
Fremde, etranger, stranger
CLIFF AND EMCEE
Happy to see you.
Bleibe, reste, stay...
EMCEE (spoken)
Meine Damen und Herren... Mesdames et
Messieurs... Ladies and Gentlemen. Where are your
troubles now? Forgotten? I told you so.
We have no troubles here! Here life is beautiful...
the girls are beautiful... even the orchestra is
beautiful.
Auf wiedersehen!
A bientot. |
