The Flight to Egypt

The Flight to Egypt

This intriguing piece of art, carved from Bog oak stands 480mm tall. AT first the carving seems purely abstract, however closer inspection will reveal that it is an interpretation of a biblical story. The figure of a hooded Mother Mary can be discerned to the left. She is seated on a donkey whose ears take on a huge wing-like form. The deformed ears seem to suggest protection of the asses rider and also convey the sense of flight. This piece was carved by Silas Sheyanawako, one of the talented Zimbabwean artists at the studio. It belongs to the Christian Mystery Collection.
