Johnstown Church, Kilmichael, Co. Cork

This Church was completed in 1996 by Fergus and his crew. The most striking aspect of this chapel is the series of tall beech panels which adorn the walls, reflecting the light and bathing the interior in a warm golden glow. The picture below shows the central ritual space composed of: the altar (bog oak and ash); with its two flanking candles (Ash); to the left the pascal candle (bog oak); and to the right the processional cross (bog oak and ash) Behind the altar are two semi-circular doors (Beech) which form a circle when closed. The doors open to reveal a beautiful radial pattern fashioned from metallic rods (click the bottom middle picture). To the left of the circle is a bog-oak candle holder and on the right side Christ on the cross.

The picture bottom right shows a flame-shaped wall-mounted book holder (click the bottom right picture). Behind the altar there is a sacrament reservation room containing a tabernacle with a three-line Celtic spiral carved on the tabernacle door. A candle sits on a glass-topped circular table surrounded by a semicircular arrangement of chairs. The tabernacle becomes the room's focal point (click the bottom left picture).
