Computer Concepts Dealt with in the movie:

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is an area of computer science which concerns computers which can engage in intelligent behavior. Scientists have been researching the technology of Artificial Intelligence machines for decades, and hollywood has been using the idea as a basis for movies for almost as long. Movies such as Blade runner, The Terminator, 2001, and now The Matrix, have all used the idea as a crucial plot element. But while truly sentient computers may remain the domain of science fiction, they are fast becoming a reality. Researchers are creating computers which can mimic human thought, understand speech, beat the best human chessplayer, and perform countless other feats never before possible.

Virtual Reality

The matrix itself, in essence is an extremely advanced virtual reality system, designed to be totally convincing in every way.

Internet

The internet is probably the most amazing development of computers, but is portrayed very innaccurately in the matrix. When Neo uses the internet to search for morpheus, hundreds of images and newspaper clips flash across the screen at imposible speeds. In reality, the internet is a lot less graphical, and intensely slow at times. Since Neo is using the internet in a simulation of 1999, one wonders whether the machines made the internet more efficient in their recreation of 1999.

Hacking

hacker: n; 1: someone who plays golf poorly 2: a programmer for whom computing is its own reward; may enjoy the challenge of breaking into other computers 3: one who works hard at boring tasks
Neo was a computer hacker in his life inside the matrix - as was Trinity. Morpheus and his crew are also hackers, of a different kind, hacking in to the matrix.

'Agents'

Computer programs, which act as automated assistants by searching through specified folders and retrieving files, are called agents. It is probably only coincidence that the Agents in the movie perform almost the exact same task.
