Firstly, I'd like to point out that this critical analysis
is based solely on what I learnt in School, but I think I've done a
good job. And now, on with the show.
The Key symbolism Present in Leon is the contrast between
light and dark imagery. The clash between light and dark is a classic
device, used to spell out the good and the evil clearly, to the minds
of the audience. There is, however, an inherent irony running through
the symbolism of Leon, turning this and many other conventions on their
respective heads.
Lets look at the clothes. Leon dresses almost completely in
black, even though he is the hero of the film. Stansfield, the principal
villain of the piece, wears light greys and whites throughout, thus
turning the light and dark contrast on its head, from a particular point
of view. A more observant viewer, might however, point out that underneath
the Black trenchcoat, leon wears white, and that stansfield is black
on the inside. This theory is backed up by the occupations of the two
men.
Leon is a professional hitman, technically a criminal - but deep
inside, hes a good person, albeit one who has lost his humanity.
Stansfield on the other hand, is a police officer, a symbol for higher
moral values, but deep inside, he is corrupt, and evil.
Another interesting irony is the issue of education. Stansfield
is an educated man. He is a fan of classical music, and quite intelligent.
Leon on the other hand, is illiterate. This would seem to suggest that
education does not necessarily negate savagery.
