iPhone  iPod & iPad Headset / Mic Adaptor

With the EchoLink application that can be used with the iPhone, iPod and iPad I found I needed a better way to use my iPod Touch as the little ear buds / Mic for me was not the best option as the ear bus kept falling out so using my computer head set with boom mic seemed a better option. This little adaptor is simple to put together and will allow you to use your PC head set and mic and I'm sure it will be adapted for other mic's and head phones. The circuit is as simple as it gets.

The 3.5mm 4 pole plug was supplied from Maplin Part Number QT65V and the 2 x 3.5mm Stereo sockets were also supplied from Maplin Order Number RK51F  (www.maplin.co.uk). Im sure that a search on the internet you will find other sources of plugs and sockets.

I found that both the 3.5mm 4 pole plug and the stereo sockets needed to have the solder lugs cleaned with a needle file or fine emery board as the silver coating was making it nearly impossible to solder to. Use as little heat as not to melt the isolation plastic. I used 2 lengths of twin screened wire I had in the shack. The lengths can be short or long depending on your requirements.

The 3.5mm 4 pole socket connection used by the makers seemed a little odd as the cable grip on the plug is used as the mic connection and not for the screen as shown above

During the testing of a number of cheap computer headset / microphone I found that some were better than others and one set worked on the PC but not on the iPod.

I hope that you find this little project is of use to you.
