£53,493
Éire Nua Building Fund
Belfast / Derry

Republican Sinn Féin has secured a premises at 229 Falls Road, Belfast as the organisation's public office in the city. This excellent location near the city centre will give a much-needed focus and morale boost to our growing membership in Belfast and throughout Ulster.

The initial cost of the office was £60,000 (punts) and since it was acquired major refurbishment has been carried out on the building. Added to that is the cost of security to protect it and those using it from the British Crown Forces, loyalist death squads and others who would threaten true Republicans. This, and currency fluctuations. have added another £15,000 (punts) to the cost.

Over £20,000 has been contributed to the fund to date and the committee is very grateful for the valuable support of members and supporters. The debt is now reduced to £53,493.

Contributions, which will be gratefully acknowledged, can be made:

  1. To the following: Mary Ward, Co Donegal; Frank McCarry, Co Antrim; Jimmy McElhinney, Co Tyrone; Geraldine Taylor, Belfast; Michael McGonigle, Co Derry; Joe O'Neill, Co Donegal; Mick McManus, Co Fermanagh; Larry McMahon, Co Monaghan
  2. By sending a donation to: Ard Oifig, 223 Parnell Street, Dublin 1 or to 229 Falls Road, Belfast.
  3. or send a donation to:
Éire Nua Building Fund, Bank of Ireland, Main Street, Limavady, Co Derry, a/c number 49431733, quoting the Branch code 90-50-96 or donate by Standing Order.

Corruption charges -- call for statement

Republican Sinn Féin Vice-President Des Long, called on the Justice Minister to make a statement on recent media reports that a Garda, who is at the centre of alleged corruption and misconduct charges in the Donegal area, was a central figure in the investigation of a very serious crime in Limerick city, that is now the subject of a court action.

Des Long asked if this Garda or any other Garda now being probed were involved in any other investigations either now or in the past in the Limerick city or county that has led to people being jailed -- that now could be classed as unsafe convictions.

Republican Sinn Féin view potential miscarriages of justice as very serious and with the introduction of some of the most draconian legal measures by the Minister, the fear of abuse is a very real danger.

Stormont ‘just a county council’

SAOIRSE has informants in the most unlikely places. On a recent flight from London to Belfast, John Taylor, Ulster Unionist Party deputy leader was overheard in conversation with a fellow passenger.

Taylor was looking forward to the British parliamentary recess in July. He was asked if he would be staying at Westminster or basing himself at Stormont.

“No”, he replied, “Stormont is just a County Council, I shall be staying at Westminster”.

John Taylor obviously knows where the power and decision-making in relation to the Six Counties remains -- with the British government in London, and not with any ‘county council’ in Stormont! The final decision on how the Six Counties is governed rests not with the Irish people but with the British.

Pipe bomb injures Down man

A 21-year-old nationalist man escaped with minor injuries following a pipe-bomb attack outside his home in Castlewellan, Co Down on July 15.

Civil servant Colin Lavery was getting into a car outside his home on the Newcastle Road when the device went off shortly before 10am. He was later treated in hospital for minor leg injuries and shock. Although loyalists were believed to be responsible, no group claimed responsibility.

Meanwhile, on the same day, a pipe-bomb was found by children playing in Ballinahone Avenue in Armagh city. The children found the device in a wall. It is believed they played with it for a while before handing it over to an adult.

» Released but not shackled Republicans welcomed the unconditional release on completion of their sentences on July 19 of Josephine Hayden, Dublin, Martin McGrath, Bundoran and Seán Óg Moore, Monaghan. As we went to press Robert McGilloway, Derry was also due for release. These Republican prisoners are not being released under licence as part of the Stormont Agreement. They struggled throughout their imprisonment for political status. In the men’s case they undertook a successful campaign to be moved from Limerick jail to Portlaoise where they achieved a measure of political status . . .

Refuse charges opposed

Two hundred residents opposed refuse charges at a meeting in the Community Centre in the Westmore area of Limerick city.

Limerick Corporation was slated for the introduction of privatisation of refuse collection costing householders £120.00 per year.

Attending the meeting was Seán O’Neill and Rose Lynch of Republican Sinn Féin. Seán O’Neill condemned Des Geraghty of SIPTU for allowing the privatisation to go to a vote putting people out of work.

Rose Lynch said it was another form of taxing the already depressed old age pensioners and unemployed. Ger Kennedy, shop steward, Limerick Corporation, was condemned for telling the workers to accept privatisation just for a few pounds.

McGuinness’s Merc V. SAOIRSE sellers

Monaghan members of Republican Sinn Féin were doing a brisk trade in selling copies of SAOIRSE at the Ulster Gaelic football final in Clones on July 16.

They were on the approaches to the St Tiernach’s Park at 2.30pm just before the final between Armagh and Derry began when they were pushed off the road by burly 26-County policemen on motorcycles with sirens blaring. They were clearing the road of the masses to make way for the Mercedes (armoured, no doubt!) ministerial car of the Stormont (‘County Council’ in John Taylor’s words) minister Martin McGuinness.

Undeterred the SAOIRSE sellers made sure the British minister got a good luck at the July headline ‘Ultimate Treachery -- Provo betrayal of Arms Dumps’. If the cap fits, wear it, Martin!

Patrick Cannon commemoration

The annual Patrick Cannon commemoration took place on July 16 last at Balgriffin Cemetery in Dublin.

Led by a colour party of Na Fianna Éireann members and supporters of Republican Sinn Féin marched to the grave where the proceedings were chaired by Frank Graham of the Patrick Cannon Cumann, Dublin.

A wreath was laid on behalf of Republican Sinn Féin and Frank Graham said a decade of the Rosary as Gaeilge. In a short oration Frank said that the ideals for which Patrick and his comrades died for are not for sale to anyone, as some people seem to think.

He went on: “Ireland belongs to the Irish and no one has the right to even think of selling any part of it.”

He called for all true Irish people to join Republican Sinn Féin and secure a 32-County Free and Gaelic Ireland.

The ceremony ended with the playing of Amhrán na bhFiann on the tin whistle by Johnathan Bermingham.
