CPT visit to Limerick jail

A TWO-man delegation from the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) visited the women’s prison in Limerick jail during September.

They talked to all the women prisoners including the sole Republican prisoner, Josephine Hayden. They were aware of her case and her heart problems and were very thorough in their inspection of the wing, Josephine told SAOIRSE.

Josephine informed the CPT delegation that none of the recommendations in their 1994 report (following their last visit to Ireland) in regard to Limerick women’s prison had been implemented since then. Following Council of Europe procedures the findings will be sent to the Dublin administration and published at their discretion. The June 1994 report was not published by Dublin until December 1995, some 18 months later.

Enhance status of Shannon Airport

The West Clare Branch of Republican Sinn Féin has called on the government to make clear what are its objectives with regard to the status of Shannon Airport.

According to Branch PRO Noel Dickinson, it is about time that the people of Clare were informed by their elected representatives what is going to happen to Shannon Airport.

“The people of Clare rely heavily on the Airport for employment, and are very worried about the future of their jobs”, he said.

“From media reports it seems that the Trans-Atlantic status of the Airport will be down graded in order to increase the level of air traffic into Dublin Airport. However, Dublin Airport already handles almost 90% of all the European flights from Ireland. What will be left for Shannon? What will become of the tourist industry we have worked so hard to build up over the years?”, he went on to say.

“Shannon Airport is a vital part of the economy of Clare and the whole Mid-West region. It is important that the status of the Airport is not just maintained but enhanced and upgraded. Republican Sinn Féin is calling on the people of Clare to accept nothing less than this”, he added.
