.............This is the jargon buster page for all that confusing satellite jargon.
....LNB...............Low Noise Block this is the device that sits on your dish for receiving the satellite signal. It also converts the signal to one your receiver can use, they come in several types but these days you only need to think of one, the Universal LNB.
...DVB........Digital Video Broadcast is the common standard for digital broadcasting in Europe and beyond, if you have a DVB compliant receiver you can watch programmes from all over Europe
...CAM.........Conditional Access Module the de-coder part of a digital box often integrated as part of the reciever itself but this tiny device also comes as a plug in module little bigger than a smartcard it just slots in to the front of most recievers to a slot called a Common Interface....more...
...Common Interface.....See CAM above and then read on ....this interface can take many different CAM types such as IRDETO SECA VIACCESS and so on. Most receivers now have a CAM slot and some have more than one with an embedded CAM as well, eg the Humax IRCI 5400
...MPEG 2......This is the compression system used to transmit the digital signal which is then decoded by you reciever
...DiSEqC......Diseqc this feature means your receiver can control several LNB's from a single cable input allowing you to use more than one dish or to use off focus reception from a single dish and two or even three LNB's. And now Diseqc can control a motorised dish system also from a single cable.
...EPG ........Electronic Programme Guide some digital channels broadcast a programme guide which you can access on screen with your remote control giving you details such as the next programme and so on.
...FEC Rate....Forward Error Correction Rate This is the amount of redundant information carried in a digital signal and varies according to the channel package you are watching. This value is expressed as a fraction for example 2/3, 3/4, and 7/8 and so on.
...SCPC......Single Channel Per Carrier digital broadcasting unlike the old analogue system can carry many TV or radio channels in a single signal but occasionally only one channel is broadcast in a single signal. This is a SCPC. They are not that common so not all receivers can manage to download them.
