Éist liom - - Listen to me

Verbs followed by prepositions / Briathair agus Réamhfhocail

Many verbs in Irish take prepositions after them. There is no rule other than knowing which preposition goes with what verb. Here are some examples:

There are many more and I will publish them here later. You can add to this list yourself by looking out for them in your reading.

Each preposition has its seven prepositional pronouns to indicate the persons. The above example Éist liom could give the following forms:

Éist liom Listen to me
Éist leat Listen to you
Éist leis Listen to him
Éist léi Listen to her
Éist linn Listen to us
Éist libh Listen to you (pl)
Éist leo Listen to them

I intend to put all the prepositional pronouns online, na forainmneacha réamhfhoclacha. You should learn them well and learn the idioms associated with them.

For the moment you will find them in a dictionary under these réamhfhocail, prepositions: ar, do, de, faoi, roimh, ó, thar, trí, ag, le, as, i, um, ionsar (The last two are seldom used outside particular Gaeltacht areas. Concentrate on the others.)
