AN AIMSIR CAITE - - THE PAST TENSE

This lesson gives a selection of verbs in the past tense - - an aimsir chaite, including all the eleven irregular and most frequently used verbs: abair, beir, bí, clois, déan, faigh, feic, ith, tar, tabhair, téigh.

The other regular verbs belong to either one of two groups called

  • an chéad réimniú - - the first conjugation containing most monosyllabic verbs such as dún, bris, fág, suigh, and also the rapidly growing list of verbs ending in ~ áil, sábháil etc which form the future tense with ~ fidh or faidh; and

  • an dara réimniú - - the second conjugation which contains verbs of more than one syllable many of them ending in ~ igh such as ceannaigh, éirigh, freagair, cosain, etc. and forming the future tense in ~óidh or ~eoidh. The differences between these are not great and some verbs appear to fit very well in either.

Since verbs convey actions they are most useful and you should aim to learn as many as you can and learn the positive, negative, and interrogative or question forms thoroughly.
