Fullscreen Uimhir / Number 106j Míniúcháin / Explanations Méadaigh

Chraith mé - - I shook two spoonfuls of sugar on it (uirthi - - because brioscóg is feminine)

d'ith mé go tapaidh í - - I ate it quickly

dhá spúnóg - - literally two spoons. Why not dhá lán spúnóige? Yes but do you really want to say "two fulls of a spoon." You would have to say dhá lán spúnóige de shiúcra which would be correct and impressive. Nevertheless beware! Do not try to translate literally from your own language to Irish!! Use the phrase everyone else uses. If you find yourself "stretching the bounds of the language" you are probably making mistakes. (I know! I do it too often and regret it.)

The grammar associated with dhá - - two is known as an uimhir dhé and I will deal with it in detail later. TYI has a little on this form of the numbers on page 161. NIG has a chapter on the numerals on page 74.
