Brief Description Corcóg, standing at the southern end of the Maamturks has a distinctive dome shape when viewed from Maam Cross. This walk is an ideal afternoon walk, and is particularly suited for those with less mountaineering experience (in good weather!) Route Description Parking is at the highest point of the road between Maam Cross and
An Maam. There are a number of lay-by's along this stretch of road. The layby at L964502
is the better choice. From the lay-by ascend onto the spur at L965495 and continue up the
East face of Corcóg. The ascent is relatively easy and takes less than 45 minutes to
complete. The cairn that marks the summit of Corcóg is across a boggy plateau. This is an
ideal place for a rest and a snack. You now have a choice, either return to the car park
the way you came or complete the longer route northwards along the ridge. If you choose
the later route, commence your decent at L947500, avoiding the cliffs that form the
backwalls of the corrie. Descend in a North Easterly direction until you are almost off
the mountain, then head Eastwards across the wet bog towards the main road. I recommend
Joe Keane's pub in An Maam for good toasted sandwiches and refreshments. The Guinness is
very good here, especially after a day on the mountains! |
