The Saltwater Fly Fishing along the North Mayo coast is a spectacular experience. Fishing from rocks and steep cliffs at the edge of the surf is a real challenge for the adventurous fly angler. To fly fish amidst the breathtaking scenery of the lonely Erris cliff line is a true adventure. This cliff coast, where the water falls steeply into depths of up to 20 meters provides the prime habitat for the fast-moving Pollack. The Pollack is a strong fighter and # 8-10 rods and solid reels with a good disk break are essential for this type of fishing to parry the fishes vigorous runs. Fast sinking shooting heads, bright, weighted streamers tied on size 2 - 2/0 saltwater hooks and short (100 - 150cm), strong (0,40mm) leaders  complement the tackle. The Pollack found close to the coast range generally between 2 and 8 lbs. but fish up to 12 lbs. have been taken fly fishing from the land. Fly anglers, who have encountered the vehement takes and vigorous runs of a Pollack regard this fish as a prime sport fish for the fly-rodder!

Explore Erris organizes guided day trips (max. 2 anglers per guide) to the top Pollack spots along the North Mayo coast. These excursions are not for the fainthearted and a good constitution is needed as long strenuous walks and in some places basic climbing skills are involved. Appropriate footwear is essential for these tours. Lifejackets, lunch packs and Pollack fly patterns will be provided. Tours are subject to weather and sea conditions and take place between mid May and late October.
