(Student Naval Architect)

Technical documentation, surveying, quality assurance, stability and strength calculations

09 Sep.’91 –

22 May ’92

BMT CORTEC Ltd., Wallsend Research Station, Tyne & Wear, England

(Naval Architect in the ‘Design Services’ Group)

Main responsibilities were technical support and production of stability booklets for passenger Ro-Ro ships.

16 Dec.’91 –

17 Jan. ’92

BMT Fluid Mechanics Ltd., Teddington, England

(On secondment from BMT CORTEC)

Seakeeping (strip theory) calculations for a research project on fishing vessel safety

01 Sep.’92 –

31 Aug.’98

Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA), Germany

(Naval Architect in the Seakeeping and Manoeuvring department)

Main areas of responsibility lay in planning, performing and documenting model tests and theoretical calculations for seakeeping problems, as well as in the associated programming work. Other regular duties were the evaluation of model tests with waterjet-propelled ships and development of the powering prediction method for such vessels. I also worked on a number of interesting projects such as SES and SWATH ships, and often corrected or translated technical publications in other fields.

01 Oct. ’98 –

28 Feb. ’00

Fr. Lürssen Werft, Bremen, Germany

(Naval Architect in the Ship Theory department)

Main areas of responsibility were the production of stability information and conducting theoretical seakeeping calculations for various projects. I also played a key role in inclining experiments and ship trials and developed a computer program for collecting GPS manoeuvring data during trials.

01 Mar. ’00 –

15 Jun. ’00

Blohm und Voss GmbH, Hamburg, Germany

(Naval Architect in the Ship Design department)

In the short time in the design office I gained experience in various parts of the design process. The main tasks were the estimation of powering, manoeuvring and seakeeping characteristics for various projects as well as helping in the development of hull lines. I also performed an operability analysis for one project with respect to seakeeping performance, based on theoretical calculations.

Since June 2000 I have taken time to develop a computer program of my own. I have also completed a training course for yacht skippers at the United Kingdom Sailing Academy.
