Join the south ring road somewhere and take the Ringaskiddy exit. Keep left over the flyover and take a left at the roundabout. Carry on the road through Passage and past the ferry, a few hundreds yards on you will see anglers fishing on the wall the green patch is in fact the grassy patch at the beginning of the wall. With a new widened road for parking, get there early and your sorted for the day.

Why the hell am I here!

Cod not codling but whacking great lunkers. OK there are plenty of smaller fish, whiting pouting, dabs and flounders eels and doggies and even bull huss and I’ve caught them all but there’s only one reason to fish the wall and that’s cod.

Time and tide:

The wall as a whole is a low water mark, though if you can hold bottom, good fishing can be had all day. A series of neap tides is best giving easy fishing.

Where to fish:

The green patch is about sixty yards long, and is probably the best place on the wall to catch big cod. It is also the best place to lose a big cod, due to the reef about 25yds out that holds a tackle shop full of terminal gear and half a lead mine. The Passage end by the telegraph pole is best for congers, otherwise the green patch fishes about the same.

Bait and method:

For cod crab is the only sure fire bait, though cocktails with crab can be used. Frozen crab will fish well if no won has fresh, if they have forget it! Distance is the key to this mark, and a clipped down pennel pulley rig with 4/0 hooks is traditional. A fast retrieve multiplier is essential to get  fish over the reef and five up to eight ounces of lead are required to hold bottom in big tides.

Tips:

The green patch dose not fish well at night, why? What do I know, everyone has there own theory. I say leave the theories to the detectives and the fishing till daylight.

2009, Its looking like another crap year for cod on the wall, I've fished it several times since Christmas and although there have been a few decent whiting about I've yet to see a codling over two pounds. Very disappointing, still with the cold spell we have been enduring I'm still holding out hope.
