Ferry point, is one of the most prolific marks in Youghal harbour and stretches from the point ( the closest point to Youghal town on the opposite side) down to the large house on the seaward side 'Monatrea'. It is the home of many matches and it is well worth taking the time to look across the harbour to see if there is any space before making the journey across the bridge.
Many species can be caught along the length of coast to Monatrea. Beginning at the point, dogfish whiting and cod (in good years) can be caught casting out into the channel. Further to the left at low water there is an out crop of rocks and mussels a good spot for bass on a coming tide, and the rest of the half moon beach is the home of quality flounder at close range and coalies and cod in the winter time. Next to the wall bordering the house of Monatrea will provide a sheltered spot where all of the above can be caught. Slack tides are always the best for flounder but big springs can bring in the cod.
As always crab is the number one bait but in times when there are plenty of fish about and they are competing for food pretty much any bait will do.
Tips. In high winds this exposed mark becomes unfishable, luckily there plenty more sheltered marks close by.
2009, Reports from ferry point have been so so with some decent catches of flounder dogs and whiting from the House end.
