Butterflies: Hibernation
Most species of butterfly and moth either migrate before winter or
over-winter as chrysalides tucked away in garden sheds, log piles, behind
bark, and so forth, or as eggs on the appropriate food plant.
A few species over-winter as adults in tree holes or will seek shelter
in sheds, garages, greenhouses, or homes. Indoors they might choose somewhere
unsuitable, such as behind a radiator or inside a fan heater or in the
folds.
You can try to persuade them to find a more suitable winter roost
before they become really comatose or, if they are found later in the season,
gently move them to a dark undisturbed corner that does not get warm enough
to waken them too early. Watch out for them as the weather warms up and
make sure they can escape before they die of exhaustion flapping at a closed
window.
