CARNAUN NATIONAL SCHOOL
Our Link with
St. Columba's Primary School,
Waterside, Derry.
The aim of this project was to learn more about
each others lives and cultures and to find ways of fostering peace in Ireland.
In the short term we hoped
to have an exchange visit between our two schools.
Sadly, because of the troubles, this did not
happen yet but we do not give up hope
Here is a sample of our communications.
| Swangate,
Dear Niamh,
My name is Lorna and I am eleven years old. I go to Carnaun N.S. My
father and my aunt are the teachers. There are 34 pupils and two teachers
in our school. I am in sixth class. I like school most of the time especially
when we do crochet. I made a starfish last term.
My hobbies are horse riding, swimming and reading. We swim in
the sea during the summer. I have great fun riding our cross-country course
with my pony. His name is "Dusky Traveller" and he is a dark bay (which
is dark brown) Connamara Pony. He is twelve hands high and is famous for
being the best pony in the Galway Blazers. My brothers ride our horses
Moonlight and Donovan. My sister's pony is called Dawn.
I am a member of the County Galway Hunt Pony Club and I will
tell you about it. My father is the District Commissioner. It is a countrywide
organisation with branches all over the country both north and south. In
the Pony Club we learn about horsemanship. We have great fun at rallies,
which are held every week during the Summer and Autumn. Very often they
are held in our land where we have nice little jumping paddocks for dressage
and a cross-country course. I like the jumping and cross-country and as
you might guess I do not like cleaning or grooming at all. My father and
brothers and sister are also very good riders.
I have a pen-pal and her name is Regan Mc Carthy. She lives in Indiana
in the U.S.A. We have a small farm with Horses, Cows and Sheep. I would
like to hear from you soon!
Bye For Now

| CastleEllen.
How are you? My name is Marcella. I am looking forward to the visit
to Derry. I hope Finbarr arranges it. We had Inishbofin School here for
a visit.
We are learning about birds. I like birds and I know a bit about them.
During the winter many different types of birds came to our feeder. We
had the Greenfinch, Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Bluetit, Coaltit and the Robin
nearly every day. We are going to sow shrubs with berries to attract more
birds to the playground.
I live near Castle Ellen wood where a huge number of birds live. The
shape of a bird's beak gives us a clue about what food it eats. CastleEllen
house was the home of Edward Carson's mother Elisabeth Lambert. Teacher
said he played hurling when he came on holidays here. We have great fun
in school. My friends in 6th class are Mary , Marilyn and Lorna. We play
basketball every day. I hope you come to visit us in Carnaun School. We
will have great fun.
Bye for now Marcella |
| Mountain North,
My name is Cathal. I am eleven years old.
My favourite games are soccer, hurling and football.
I play soccer for Athenry under eleven and under thirteen. In the winter
we play soccer in the gym. We are playing well under thirteen this year.
We are forth in the league. We beat Corrib Rangers, Gort and Barna. In
the New Year we will have a new soccer pitch. We have 36 children in our
school. It is good for sport. We play soccer, hurling, basketball and rugby.
I am a keen Soccer fan. I support Newcastle United.
I also follow hurling. Our club St. Mary's Athenry were the all Ireland
champions two years ago and we hope they will be this year. This letter
is in our club colours.
Bye for Now

Hi There!
My name is Stephen. I go to Carnaun School N.S. in Athenry Co.Galway.
I would like to say hello to the boys and girls in St. Columbia primary
school. I would like to tell you something about my school. It has two
teachers and 36 pupils. The principal who is called Mr. Finbarr O'Regan
and our other teacher is called Mrs. Anita Coffey. I am in 6th class and
there are 3 boys and 4 girls in our room. Our school is about three miles
from the town of Athenry. It was made more famous by the song The
Fields of Athenry sung by Paddy Reilly. It also has a great hurling team
called St Mary's who won the all Ireland club championship last St Patrick's
day in Croke Park.
Now I would like to tell you about myself. My hobbies are football,
hurling and soccer. My favourite team is Liverpool. The player I most enjoy
watching is Robbie Fowler. I also have a dog, three cats, some hens, sheep
and two heifers calves which I bought during the summer. In my family there
are four people: my father, my mother and my older brother Martin and I
am the youngest. That's all for now ,
Yours sincerely
Stephen. |
| Knockbrack,
Hello there!
My name is Eoin. I will be 13 years old on the
14th. of November. I am in sixth class. We play a lot of sports like hurling,
football, soccer and basketball. It is a good school. There are two teachers
in the school. It is a small school with 34 pupils. I belong to a big family,
6 boys and 6 girls. I am in the middle of the family. My father is a farmer.
We have suckler cows and over 200 sheep. My job is to look after the sheep
in the winter when they are in the sheep shed. We had about 300 lambs and
it is hard work but I like farm work. I drive the tractor. Some times I
bring feed to the cattle. My dog's name is Lassie but she is not a very
good sheep dog. She drives the sheep wild. I hope you will write back to
us.

| Castle Ellen,
Dear Fiona
My name is Mary. I am age 10 years old. My hobbies are Basketball,
Swimming, and Camoige. My favourite TV progames are Father Ted, ER, and
Friends. My best friend is Marcella Costello. We have been
best friends for seven years. I have one brother James and one sister Laura.
They both go to the Vocational School in Athenry. I live in Castle Ellen
where we have a suckler cow herd and my Father and Mother run a milk buisness.
I help them deliver the milk very early in the morning and I like it very
much.
We have a bog in Newcastle. Newcastle is about 15 minutes away
from my house. My uncle [Geard] shares the bog with us. We cut our turf
by machine then it is left out on the bank in rows. We save it by turning
every sod by hand and it is hard work. When all the turf is dry we bring
it home with the tractor and trailer. When we bring it home we have to
put it in the shed so that it won’t get wet. We burn our turf in the fire
and we also give away some of our turf to our granny. Sometimes I like
to sit down in front of the fire and read a book. We hope to go on a field
trip to the bog soon. Every day we are learning more about the animals,
insects, birds and plants on the bog.
I play camoige with our parish team under 10s, 12s, and 13s.We
practice in Athenry town and we got to the semi-final last year.
