Summer, 2001 four students from Stockholm, Sweden visited us in Carnaun School for a day.
They were interested in the Irish Primary Curriculun and in Teaching Methods of the Irish Teachers.
The following is an email, Linus, one of the students sent to Carnaun School at Christmas..

Hello!
First of all, I must apologize for the lateness of this e-mail! I had planned to sent one much sooner, but things have been hectic to say the least. I cannot help but wonder how a holiday of peace and tranquillity can cause such a rush and such panic. We must have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way..

Now, I don’t wish to take up too much of your time, as I know that you are busy too. The number one reason for this message is of course to say THANK YOU! I have never before seen such hospitality in a school, neither in Sweden nor in any other place. I think you should all be very proud. It was clear that you made an effort to make us all feel very welcome, and you did a fine job with that.

Your school is a very special one. The children are very calm and nice, and have a lovely sense of humour, all of which suggests a very secure environment. This is unfortunately not the case in all schools. There is a spirit of freedom in the school, but also a sense of direction. It is all balanced in a way that I think leads to greater learning.

As for the teaching, I think we were all quite impressed. Although the children were not constantly supervised, they knew what to do, and did it. I realize that this was a special occation, and that every day is not like this. The atmosphere usually gets a little strained when there are visitors. If this was the case in this school, I will be surprised, as it didn’t show. In our conversation I found that even though you have been using the same methods for a long time, they are what I would consider quite modern! They are methods we are being taught to use now.

I would again like to thank you for the wonderful welcome we got. Thanks also for the gift and the soup. We did return to that restaurant again, and I tried the chowder. It was, needless to say, very tasty indeed! If you have any questions or comments regarding anything, I would be most happy to answer them.

Finally, Merry Christmas! And give my best to all the children!
