CARNAUN
NATIONAL SCHOOL
"A Week in the Life of an
Irish Child"
My name is Róisín. A farm is a very important place and
a farmer is a very important person. There are big farms and small farms
in Ireland. In our area the farms are not very big, About 40 hectares each.
I live on a farm with my parents and ten brothers and sisters. Its a very
healthy lifestyle and land life can be very rewarding. The Farmer, my dad
says is the keeper of land' and we must pass it on to next generation in
a very good condition. I help my Father on the farm as much as I can. When
I come home from school, I quickly change into my outside working clothes
and get on my Quad bike and go up the fields to check the sheep. We have
a slatted shed for our cattle during the bad winter mounts. We don’t have
all our cattle in the shed yet as it's a bit early. We have our cows and
calves in. We have them separated as the calves are now too old to be feeding
on their mothers. So I feed them silage in the shed. We will be putting
the sheep in the sheep shed at Christmas and they will be kept in until
they have their lambs in March. The fields are getting very bare now as
winter approaches and there is no more, growth until spring. We use two
tractors for bringing in the silage to the cattle in the shed, to transfer
sheep and cattle from one farm to another or to the mart in Athenry or
to the factory in Co. Roscommon. Roscommon is 40 miles and in km it is
50km from Knockbrack. I use my quad bike to bring bags of nuts to the sheep
that are being fed outside.
I like school especially morning news. Last week in the news....
