The Hen is Hatching
The hen house is really a stable but it suits
my four hens and the cock. At least they don’t complain much. When we let
them out we have to be very watchful, as there are foxes living nearby
in the woods. As I am in charge of them I feed them every day.

We knew Ransome
(that’s her name) was hatching
because she was reluctant to leave the nest and every time we went to
see her she was sitting on her eggs. She was also making a different clucking
noise. She was now “a clocking hen” so we put ten eggs under her and put
a board across the nest so that the other hens would not disturb her. We
marked the ten hatching eggs so that we would know if another hen had laid
an egg in her nest. She is a small hen and ten eggs are enough for her.
It will be three to four weeks before the eggs hatch and I am looking forward
to seeing her parade her chicks out into the yard one fine morning. If
she does I will tell you about it!

The chicks
have arrived!
Two lovely chickens were born last Monday
moring. When I noticed the first crack in an egg I got very excited. I
called my Father and Mother to jump out of bed quickly to come and see.
My Mother said that "hens always manage on their own" but I stayed to watch.
I thought we might have more than two but we were delighted to have any
at all as it was not springtime when chicks are usually born. Ransome was
very proud and protective as I found out when I went to take up a chick. They
were to tiny so fragile, so cuddly and so warm. I got a peck from her.
She was delighted when I named them Ruby
and Rachel. (With R's like Ransome) More later!
Marilyn.
