CARNAUN NATIONAL SCHOOL ![]() Sport in our Area Dusky Traveller, Bran and 'Me' My favourite subject is Horse Riding or in my case Pony Riding. Pony riding is extremely popular in my area and so it should be because County Galway is the home of the world famous Connemara pony. Only in the 20th centuary were Connemara ponies recognised for their exceptional qualities. Hardy, companionable, resilient yet pliant. Pasture in Connemara is scarce and the ponies eat very little of it. Instead they feed on salt tolerant grasses on the seashore. My pony's name is Dusky Traveller. He is a Connemara pony. He is called Dusky because of his brown colour and Traveller because my father bought him from three Travellers in the famous Ballinasloe October Fair. He is famous as one of the great hunting ponies of the Galway Blazers and admired by hundreds of visitors from all over the world. His photo adornes many a drawing room wall from Africa to America. Marilyn's pony "Smokey" is also a Connemara pony and also an excellent jumper. When the Irish Goverment wanted to give The U.S.A. President J.F. Kennedy a presant for his children they gave him a Connemara Pony on the advice of the Athenry people.
