A Bulletin from Athenry Pastoral
Council. Summer 1999 Second
Edition
What the Pastoral Council has
been doing!
The first bulletin from the Athenry Pastoral
Council (Easter 1998) told you about the formation of the group and its
efforts in working with the priests to respond to the pastoral needs of
the people through
* Visitation Group
- to the sick and elderly people.
* Soilse - organising
a monthly disco to help support people with special needs.
* Fáilte -
Welcoming and supporting new people coming to live in the parish.
* Adult Education Faith programmes with
FR. Enda Lyons.
* Jubilee 2000
and support to the Millennium Committee.
* Collaborating with groups preparing for
Parish Festival Week (Dec. 4-11th '99)
* Updating the List of Parish Services,
Organisations and Clubs.
More people and new ideas are most welcome.
This is an invitation to you to be involved in your parish.
Without your interest and help we will fall short.
Soilse:Athenry
friends of people with special needs. Activities include: an annual holiday
in Kilcuan, Ctarinbridge; a monthly disco in The Newpark Hotel; and half
day excursions to places of interest. Contact Mary at 091-844053.
Fáilte:
It was
set-up last year arising from Pastoral Council discussions. Its purpose
is to meet and welcome all new people who have come to live in Athenry
parish.
To give
them information on Clubs, Organisations and Societies in the area.
Fáilte
was headed by Ned Waldron with the help of Pat & Jane Kilbane, Rosaleen
Madden, Eileen Freaney, Marian Courtney and members of Newcastle Community
Council. Since 1998 a huge effort is being made to visit new residents
in the Parish with a letter of welcome, parish map, Meitheal, list of clubs,
societies and parish services.
This has
proved to be a very worthy exercise and we wish to express our gratitude
to all the people who were involved in this project. The Pastoral
Council would also like to thank all the parishioners who make new people
welcome and express their hospitality in all sorts of practical ways.
Small things are such a big help when you are trying to settle in.
On parish visitation, the priests of the parish sense the temperature of
neighbourhood hospitality and welcome and it is very impressive in most
areas.
Quo
Vadimus - Where are we going?
This is
a Report on the Pastoral Needs and Resources of the Archdiocese of Tuam.
It was compiled from a detailed questionnaire sent to the 56 parishes of
the diocese. It presents the current situation over a wide range
of issues and is offered as a discussion document to appraise the best
ways to respond to the needs of the people within the resources that are
available.
We are
most grateful to the parish group with Ciaran O'Keeffe as co-ordinator
who have compiled a response to this document and forwarded it to the diocese.
A summary was compiled by Gráinne Forrest. Thanks to the 18
members for their work. Copies of Quo Vadimus are available in the
Newcastle & Athenry Churches, the Athenry Library. The Parish
Response and the Summary will be available for parishioners in the autumn.
Millennium
Committee;
The Athenry
Millennium Committee was formed over three public meetings. Its aim
is to offer itself as a central committee to co-ordinate millennium events;
to provide a publicly displayed calendar of these events; and to act as
a central body where different organisations can apply for Government Millennium
Funds.
The countdown
for the Millennium starts on Lady's Day, August 15th. 1999.
A Calendar
will be on public display from mid-July. This will keep people up-to-date
with happenings in the parish and be of assistance in pre-venting the clashing
of events. Names: Chairperson: Ciaran O'Keeffe, Sec. Marie Gardiner.

PARISH
PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND. AUG 29 - SEPT. 7
LIFE IS
A PILGRIMAGE: During the coming months, our preparation for the new Millennium
calls us to look at our lives as a pilgrimage or journey. A journey
which is sometimes hard, sometimes beautiful - a journey from birth to
death and beyond, a journey through
the years
of childhood, adulthood and old age, a journey of faith towards God - a
journey of hope, a journey of love.
LADY'S
DAY. AUGUST 15TH. 1999.
Our pilgrimage
will mark our parish preparations in a special way this year. The
OFFICIAL OPENING AND BLESSING of the MILLENNIUM PARK and the SCULPTURE
as centrepiece will add a new dimension to this unique and special place
in our parish. We will walk in the footprints of the thousands who
have walked in pilgrimage to Lady's Well down the centuries. The
young adults of the parish are planning to make a creative contribution
on this the last pilgrimage of the century.
When the
schools re-open, we hope that the focus will be on young people.
The new century will belong to them in a way that it can never belong to
us who are older. We will welcome their ideas and do all we can to
help them put them into action.

THE STATIONS: WE CELEBRATE OUR PEOPLE AND OUR PLACE, WHEN WE COME TOGETHER.
WE ENCOURAGE EACH AREA TO MARK THIS EVENT WITH THEIR NEIGHBOURS IN A SIMPLE
AND SYMBOLIC WAY. ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS?
In particular,
we offer a sincere and sensitive invitation to people who have become inactive
in the practice of their faith to return to Christ. It is a personal
call to be reconciled with Him and with each other. You are missed.
We need you with us. Your parish needs you.
