King House was built on former MacDermot clan land around 1730 by Sir Henry King. King House is of unique historical and architectural significance. After its first life as a home to the King family it was bought by the British army and was home to the famous Connaught Rangers regiment in 1788 until 1922. In more recent years it was a barracks for the Irish Regiment. ( Picture on right before restoration)

In 1989, having realised the cultural significance of King House, Roscommon County Council began an extensive restoration project. Skilled artisans and local craftsmen used traditional techniques and materials to restore its former glory. Of particular note is the Long Gallery with its origional marble fireplace, the tripartite Venetian windows and vaulted ceilings, and the Main Salon once again in use for recitals and banquets ( picture on left)

The Exhibition runs throughout King House and covers four themes.
