Fossa/Listry U21
Fossa/Listry took on Rathmore in the last 16 of the county club championship on Thursday last in Rathbeg. It was the visitors who got off to the better start when through points from Damien Clifford and Jimmy Falvey(2) had them 3 points to the good after 10 minutes. Rathmore responded with a point of their own before Kevin Leane made a fine save to knock a goalbound effort over the crossbar. Jimmy Falvey added a free and David Nolan then scored a fine point from play. Rathmore finished the half stronger scoring 1-2 without reply to lead 1-4 to 0-5 at the short whistle. David Nolan added his second score 30 seconds after the restart and Falvey had the sides on level terms with a huge free minutes later. Rathmore again responded with two pointed frees before Fossa/Listry hit for their first goal. Fossa were awarded a free on the 21m line and when the Rathmore backs switched off for a minute Falveys quick thinking had the ball nestling in the back of the net. He followed this up with another from play before Fossa/Listry found the net again after a fine move ended with Kenneth Clifford calmly slotting home. Fossa/Listry now had a 5 point cushion and looked good to hold out. Two quick scores by the home side had the gap down to three before Falvey restored a four point cushion with a 45. Rathmore once again drove forward and had the ball in the back of the visitors net for the second time to leave the minimum between the sides with time almost up. However, there was one last twist when the Rathmore goalkeeper came up the field and pointed a huge free to level up the game at 2-9 apiece. Fossa/Listry began extra time the better with Damien Clifford adding his second before David Nolan added his third with a beauty. However the sides were once again level at 2-11 apiece at half time in extra time. Falvey added two points, one from play and one free, in the second period of extra time and although there was some more drama before the end Fossa/Listry held out on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-11. This was a truly enthralling game and huge credit must go to both sides in providing such wonderful entertainment. It was unfortunate that there had to be a loser. Although there were fine performances on both sides, one has to mention the huge display of Frank McCarthy in the Fossa/Listry defence who was simply immense throughout and ably assisted by John Foley while up front Falvey’s haul of 1-8 was vital and David Nolan produced a wonderful display, kicking 3 from play and being involved in much more. Credit too must go to Jimmy O’ Shea from Glenfesk who refereed this fine encounter. Fossa/Listry are now through to the last 8 and will fear little after grinding out this fine victory.
