Since 1979 I have been employed as a television Producer/Director in RTÉ (Radio Telefís Éireann),
the Irish national broadcasting company. In the intervening years I have worked in many programme areas including:-
- Current Affairs
- Documentaries
- Irish Language
- Science and Technology
- Education
- Young Peoples'
- Sport
- Drama
I'm currently (2005) Series Producer of "FAIR CITY", RTÉ's premier soap-opera which is broadcast four times a week.
Documentaries
Over the years I have had the good fortune to produce some very interesting documentaries. One which stands out in particular is a drama-documentary, which was shot over the summer months of 1996 and 1997.
"BALLYSEEDY"
told the story of a series of tragic and related explosions which occurred in Co. Kerry in March, 1923 during the course of the Irish Civil War.
Then in the summer of 1998, I travelled to New York to make a documentary on Niall O'Dowd, publisher of "Irish America" magazine and "The Irish Voice"
weekly newspaper.
In spite of his hectic publishing activities, Niall has found time in the last five years to galvanise American support for the Peace Process in Northern Ireland.
Other Careers!
My first job after leaving college was as Administrative Officer in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs in Dublin where I worked for two years prior to joining RTÉ.
Between 1983 and 1985 I took a leave of absence from RTÉ and travelled to Zimbabwe where I worked as a mathematics and science teacher at Mount St. Mary's Secondary School in Wedza. I have very happy memories of my time there.
