PATRICK TIERNEY born in Co. Tipperary |
married | CATHERINE LONERGAN born in Co. Tipperary |
Patrick and Catherine resided in Monameigh, Cashel, Co. Tipperary.
The house is shown in the Censes of 1901 and 1911 as being constructed of either stone, brick or concrete with a roof of either slate, iron or tiles. It had 2 rooms with 2 windows to the front of the house. In 1901 the outhouses consisted of a cow house and calf house (called "The Dairy"), 1 piggery, 1 fowlhouse and 1 barn. By 1911 rather than a barn the house is shown as having 1 stable and 1 shed.
The Census of 1901 records Patrick as being a Farm Labourer. (However he is said to have been Head Groom in "The Commons", racing stables owned by the Ryan O'Connors on the Cashel-Rosegreen road.)
 | | Catherine Lonergan |
Catherine ran the home, tilled the haggard and sold eggs and vegetables at the market in Cashel. Afterwards it was her wont to drop into the snug in "Feehan's Public House" for a glass of sherry(?) and a chat with her friends.
While waiting for her to return home, her children used to sing a little rhyme they had made up... "Bring her along, bring her along, bring her along. She's at the..." Here they listed, one after another, the names of various landmarks on the way home.
When they finally came to the name of Con Brien, their next-door neighbour, they would rush out to see if Catherine was there. More likely than not she was nowhere to be seen! So they returned indoors and started their rhyme all over again!!
Patrick was able to "Read and Write" (1901 Census). Many of his neighbours at the time were illiterate and regularly called to his house to have him read the latest edition of the "Freemans Journal" newspaper.
Both Catherine and Patrick were alive at the time of the 1911 Census (2nd. April, 1911). However Patrick and many of the children were absent from home on the night of the census (possibly working at "The Commons").
Patrick died on 15/5/1922 at Dualla, Cashel, Co. Tipperary. Catherine died on 23/1/1934. Both are buried in Ballysheehan Cemetery, Cashel, Co. Tipperary. Catherine's remains were taken along the avenue to Ballysheehan in a horse-drawn hearse complete with black plume.

Author's Note: Nora Tierney was my grandmother. In 1956, when I was one year old, her brothers, Bill (Willy) and Phil, returned to Ireland from the U.S.A. on holidays. They travelled to Ballymahon where they met Nora. I was also there on the occasion of their visit and was the beneficiary of a £20 gift from Phil, a considerable sum in 1956. It appears that Nora was a bit miffed as she had installed a new fireplace to impress the visitors and fed and watered them during their stay in Ballymahon!
