WELCOME VISITORS

Welcome visitors to Cashel recently are brothers William and Philip Tierney, of Mayfield, who recently arrived with Mrs. William Tierney for a holiday in their native land. It is a good many years since William Tierney was in the very first rank of Irish flat race jockeys, rivalling for supremacy such famous riders as the late John Thompson and John Doyle.

In his youth Willie, as he was popularly known everywhere, was apprenticed to the late Mr. John O'Dwyer, who trained for the late Mr. James Ryan O'Connor at the latter gentleman's stables, but a few miles from Cashel.

Among Willie's numerous turf successes was the "1500" at the Phoenix Park, his mount being one of the progeny of the late Mr. J.R. O'Connor's sire, "Sir Edgar".

IN THE U.S.A.

Willie emigrated to the U.S.A. where his love for racing and horses was unabated; and his services as a trainer had many rewards. Having retired from the cares and worries of Director, he is still interested in the thrills and excitement of the Race course, having at home and abroad graced the profession with his high standards of honour, integrity and sportsmanship.

Mr. Philip Tierney had many associations with the commercial life of Cashel, being a member of the staff of the late Mr. Patrick Quirke, Draper, Lowergate Square.

Philip, too, emigrated to the U.S.A., where his business acumen and urbanity contributed largely to his rapid promotion, which has reached the responsible office of buyer in one of the largest drapery emporiums in Hartford, Connecticut.

As a young man he endeared himself to followers of the G.A.A. by the big part he played in the foundation and successes of the Ballyfowloo Hurling Club, which, we regret to say, is no longer mentioned in the current South of West Division registers of teams.

On behalf of the people of Cashel and surrounding districts, we wish the visitors a happy and memorable holiday.
