ABOUT US |
WHACKY RACERS are Eamonn McAuley and John Culleton
We started rallying together in 1993
We are both members of BIRR & DISTRICT AUTOMOBILE CLUB
Our first event was the Birr & District Forestry Rally in that year. We competed in a 1300cc Mazda 323. We won our class in this event......not a bad start !!
The following year we competed in the same event, but the car came to grief in a flood of water on the third stage and the little Mazda became history...........
In 1996 we bought a 1985 Toyota Corolla 1600cc GT TWIN CAM
In this year we competed in 5 National Tarmac events with limited success, our best result being a 5th in class and 22nd overall in the ALMC Motague Hotel Rally in Portlaoise.
After this we decided on a complete rebuild of the car. After a lot of enquiries we got in touch with Richard Macer, of RM Sport in Letchworth in England, and commissioned a new engine. We took delivery of the engine in October 1998. We then contacted WEST WALES RALLY SPARES and ordered a new Quaife Pro gearbox.
We stripped the car down to and started the rebuild with a totally bare shell. After many long nights and lots and lots of help from friends the Corolla was ready to roll in October 1998.
We entered the Fastnet Rally in 1998 and after some problems on Stage 1 the car ran reasonably well. We finished the event but the problems on Stage 1 dashed any hope of a result of any kind.
1999 was a great year for the "Whacky Racers", winning Class 10 in the Red Mills National Championship with 4 maximum scores and 3 second placed scores. Finishing in the top 20 on 6 occassions. The maximum scores were taken in Ravens Rock, Carlow, Portlaoise (ALMC) and Galway Summer.
We made many friends in our first year involved in a championship and look forward to competing against them again in 2000. Best of luck to them all and thanks for a great 1999.
In early December we decided to send the engine back to Richard Macer (RM Sport) for a thorough check over and to convert to throttle bodies to try and improve on power distribution . We hope that this will give us another step up in performance for the coming season.
