St Laurence O'Toole
Prayer Service

Some elements of this prayertime should be suitable for all levels in the Primary school. In its entirety it could form the basis for a whole school assembly on Friday November 13th or indeed anytime. Individual elements or a combination of elements could be used for class prayer time. The recommended Scripture can be tailored to suit class level e.g. omitted for Junior classes, abbreviated and adapted for middle classes, used in its entirety for Senior classes.

Set up a prayer space containing items from nature, Celtic tradition, symbols of Dublin, Glendalough, the children's artwork etc. Ask children to bring in relevant items for prayer space; (Jubilee) candle at centre; picture of Saint Laurence O'Toole (or children's impression/picture of him). Perhaps the children could come in procession to the prayer space each one carrying an item to place in the sacred place.

Teacher (as the candle is lit)

The Saints are people who share the light of God's love in the world. Today we remember Saint Laurence O'Toole who is the special Patron Saint of all those who live in the Archdiocese of Dublin, our own special Saint. Many people in Ireland and in France are called after Saint Laurence. Some churches in Dublin, one in France, some flats, schools and a football team are also called after him. Today, as we remember Saint Laurence we ask him to prayer for us. We especially ask him to help us to get ready for the great Jubilee Year of 2000.

Holy water could one the items included in the sacred space. The teacher sprinkles the children with Holy Water.

This Holy water reminds us of our baptism. We are God's holy and chosen people. God's life and God's Holy Spirit live in us. We are called to be saints like Laurence O'Toole and all the Saints. May all the Saints of Ireland pray fro us as we prepare for the great jubilee year 2000. may each one of us and our country be, as Jesus askes us to be, the light of the world and the salt of erth. May we follow the example of Laurence O'Toole and be a beacon for peace, reconciliation and justice in our world. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
