ORDINATION OF AQUINAS DUFFY
Below are a few pictures from the ordination ceremony held at Holy Cross College, Clonliffe Road, Dublin on Eigth of June 1984. The ceremony was perfomed by The Most Rev. Dermot Ryan, Archbishop of Dublin. On this day Richard Behan (from the parish of Knocklyon) and Aquinas Duffy (from the parish of Sallynoggin, Co. Dublin) were ordained for the diocese of Dublin. It was the last ordination perfomed by Archbishop Dermot Ryan before his departure to Rome where he died three months later.
Archbishop Ryan anoints the hands of Aquinas Duffy. The deacons on either side were (from left) Pat Sarsfield and Michael Collins.
The act of lying down on the floor signifies the handing over of one's life to the Lord.
Other priests present at the ceremony also "lay hands" which is a custom which goes back to the early days of Christianity praying for the power of the spirit upon those to be ordained.
This picture was taken after the ordination ceremony and shows (from left) Fr Richard Behan, Archbishop Dermot Ryan, and Fr Aquinas Duffy.
