The Creature

Both stood still, awaiting each other's movement. From his window he had seen it. "Oh God, please don't let it go away," he said, as his small legs hurried before it was too late.

He had made it, but was unable to move. What was this black creature that was able to fly and walk? What if I could touch and feel its coat that had flown through the skies?

At that moment the creature made a move, as if understanding the boy's thoughts. It knew not how to differentiate between young and old, male and female. Never had it known love from these creatures. It kept a safe distance for fear of being deprived of its life.

"My last chance", he whispered, as he ran in pursuit. "Come back, I won't hurt you", he cried. Unfortunately for him, the creature did not understand the psychology of humans. It knew but its own instincts. Soaring high into the sky, it fled into a world which was almost devoid of humans.

The boy stood still and silent, his curiously sad eyes staring into the heavens, as if asking why the beautiful creature had disowned him and why he was subject to gravitational laws. Somehow it became clear to him that being alive was more complicated than it seemed. Disappointed that his first attempt to understand his world had failed, he began to walk home.

Suddenly, realising that he had just composed two questions, he thought of the day when he would find the answers. Now the flowers seemed fresher, the sky more blue and life more wonderful. Jumping up and whistling to himself, he started to run homewards.
