DIMM
DIMM
or Dual In Line Memory module.
The
advantage of a DIMM module is that it has a 64 bit (72 bit with parity)
wide data path and can be used in a single type of arrangement in Pentium
motherboards, which normally require two SIMMs to work.
To
avoid having to insert SIMMs in pairs, the current DIMM format
was
concieved, and now offers the latest design of plug-in memory for PCs.
They
normally have 68 connector pins.
Usually,
2-4 DIMM slots have a current memory capacities ranging from 16Mb to 256Mb
for each DIMM module.
DIMMs
usually come in three varieties 66MHz Extended Data Out (EDO), 66MHz Synchronous
Dynamic Random Access memory (SDRAM) or the new 100Mhz SDRAM for the BX
chipset and other compatibles.
The
type of DIMM chosen usually dictates the memory configurations available
to you.
