PCI
slots stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slots. These
are 32 bit expansion slots.
These
slots are usually identified by their white colour. The connector pins
are smaller and closer together than the ISA slots.
PCI
has been developed by Intel Corporation and has the support of some of
the major manufacturers (IBM, Compac).
The
PCI bus defines three types of address space:-
Memory
I/O
(Input and Output)
Configuration
Each
PCI device is equipped with a 256 byte area, which includes details about
the device and its type (i.e. network card, disk controller).
