PCI Slots

PCI slots stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slots. These are 32 bit expansion slots.

These slots are usually identified by their white colour. The connector pins are smaller and closer together than the ISA slots.

PCI has been developed by Intel Corporation and has the support of some of the major manufacturers (IBM, Compac).

The PCI bus defines three types of address space:-

Memory

I/O (Input and Output)

Configuration

Each PCI device is equipped with a 256 byte area, which includes details about the device and its type (i.e. network card, disk controller).
