Howdy

Can anyone identify the colour schemes on the bf109 and FW190 variants? Do they represent the aircraft flown by LW "aces"?

Fw190A4: looks like the Green Russian front camouflage, the Yellow aft fuselage bands are Russian front? Double chevron means a unit leader?

Fw190A8: "Red 14" Blue/White/Blue band... is this a "Defense of the Reich" marking or JG.300(which wore Blue/White/Blue)?

Fw190D9: ???

bf109E-4: This is a representation of Gallands Emil... "Black Chevron and Bars".

bf109F-4: White band of the African campaign with the number "14" on the side. Hans-Joachim Marseille?

bf109G-6: Red band... is this JG.1?

bf109G6/R6: Green band. ???

bf109K-4: "Red 4".???

Any answers will be gratefully received.

cheers

Here's the short version of the Fw 190A-8... with the ID of Red 14.

Red 14 started out as a Fw 190A-3 (?, don't have all the papers here, may have been an A-2 or A-4...just got up from a nap and brain is fuzzy). It was wrecked completely 2 or 3 times, but ended up being rebuilt as a Fw 190A-8 where it finished out the war.

That one airframe was hammered 2 or 3 times, but always returned to base and (as far as anyone can tell/find/etc.) never lost a pilot. If memory serves, it took 2 or 3 3.7cm AAA hits and crash landed back at base (but the pilot survived) just before it was refitted/rebuilt to Fw 190A-8 standards.

Call it good Fw 190 karma - when you fly a Fw 190A-8 in WB the Nordic God of Fw 190As is using .001% of his multitasking ability to keep an eye on you in that tiny little virtual universe. 8)

As far as the color markings for all the aircraft go, check out Ruy Horta's JG 53 web page. There is a section there on LW unit/defense color markings. You were correct about the Fw 190A-8s unit markings.

See you up there,

Mike ('wulfie', 2./JG 14)

Comparing "our" Fw190A-4 with the A-5 Nowotny flew in '43....looks identical too me, except that Nowotny's Fw lacks the outer MGFF's.

Anyone know if FT "painted" our A-4 after Nowotnys?

Fw190A8

"Red 14" was a famous bastard in the LW stable. She started as an A4, was damaged badly and sent to refurbishing around 1943. She then underwent the transformation into an A8 and at that time re-entered service with JG301. She survived the war and was captured by advancing American ground units. I must admit I had "something" to do with this one <g>!

Ju87G

It's Rudel's G-1 model from SG2 serving on the the Eastern Front in the Autumn of '44. BIG GUNS!

Fw190A4

This one is Walter Nowatny's as GK of JG54 Grunherz. November 1943.

I used to know them all

Where's FT when you need him??

Fw 190A-8...'Red 14'.

Like MO said.

'Destroyed' 3 times on landing (all due to heavy damage), but still 'rebuildable'.

One incident involved taking 2 37mm or 40mm hits and still getting home.

As far as records showed, no LW pilot was killed while flying this aircraft.

If memory serves, anyone with the Squadron Signal book on the Fw 190A can see a picture of 'Red 14' on the 're assembly' line.

Also, don't forget the Finnish markings that the Bf 109G-6 used to carry.
