I
am a maker of music and digital films based in Dublin, Ireland.
I began my musical career at the age of 9, recording songs on an
old tape machine inspired by the music of AC/DC and Michael Jackson!
Between 1995 and 1999 I played in a group with my friends. We were
originally called the Gargoyles and then 37. We mostly played in
Cork but eventually moved to Dublin and did support slots with the
Frames, Whipping Boy, Blink and BellX1. At this stage I began to
learn a lot about recording and began to produce the band's
songs on a digital 8-track.
By
1999 I wanted to learn more about composition and took private lessons
with reknowned composer Fergus
Johnston in music theory and aesthetics. Fergus opened my ears
to the wonders of Ligeti, Stravinsky and others. At that point I
decided to apply for a postgraduate course in Music and Media Technologies
in Trinity College Dublin so that I could learn more about music
and ,well, erm, technology.
During this period I studied composition with Donnacha
Dennehy, Roger
Doyle, Fergus Johnston and Jurgen Simpson. I also became interested
in digital video and I started to experiment with sound/image agglomerations
inspired by the likes of Chris Cunningham and the Quay Brothers.
This merger of electroacoustic music and digital video has led me
to where I am now and it is a kind of exciting area.
Recently
I collaborated with composer Donnacha Dennehy and video artists
Mark Linnane and Aki Aro on a project called The Weathering which
has subsequently been shown in New York's Lincoln Center and Amsterdam.
The project incorporated live performance and projected visuals.
I am currently self-producing (in my bedroom!) a documentary on
Cork-based guitar genius/composer/Irish speaker Giordai ua Laoghaire.
