COOLOCK

COOLOCK

An Introduction

The Barony of Coolock, in its present form, dates from the early 1830’s and contains over 120 townlands. Baronies were divisions of land which were introduced to Ireland by The Normans in the 11th & 12th centuries. Sometimes these Baronies copied earlier Kingdoms, but those in Co. Dublin such as Coolock were newly drawn up.

The name "Coolock" comes from the Irish word "Cúlóg" meaning "Little Corner" and dates from Norman times also. There are other explanations as to the meaning of Coolock such as "Coilleach" meaning "Woody District", and "Cúlach", meaning "a place at the back of the hill".
