The country had been brought to its knees by the Great Famine in the 1840s and 50s.

Emigration and death, through starvation and sickness had decimated the population.

The "Parnell" split caused great tension between the Catholic Church and the people and divided many families.

However, in 1899 there was hope in the hearts of the Irish people …. hope that the Famine days were over and there was hope that there would be independence from Britain very soon.

There were major improvements in health and education and many Associations were formed to improve the way of life of the people …. The Gaelic League and The G.A.A., for example.
