MAYO SHINES IN GAA SCHOOLS COMPETITIONS.

The Mayo National Schools Sports Committee have drawn up the year's activities, and they include Boys and Girls Gaelic Football, Rounders, Camogie, Hurling, Athletics and Coaching.

With a total of 128 Schools competing, Mayo is the 4th largest area affiliated in the Country, headed only by the large urban areas of Dublin 266 Schools, Galway 184 Schools and Cork 151 Schools.

Mayo promotes 5 of the Gaelic Games, Boys and Girls Football, Hurling, Camogie and Rounders. When these activities are taken into consideration, and the number of boys and girls participating in the 5 Garelic Sports are totalled, Mayo is in second position, Dublin being the only County with greater participation. 125 Schools have entered the boys football competition, and will be run off in 4 divisions-Div. 1-13 Schools, Div. 2-17 Schools, Div.3-52 Schools and Div.4-43 Schools. Division 2 commences on March 29th, and the first division commences on April 26th. In Div. 3 and 4, the area organisers are drawing up the local competitions in each area, and the area finals will be played on May 10th.

31 Schools have entered the inaugural girls Football competition, and will be run off in 6 areas-Achill-10 Schools, Claremorris-5 Schools, Ballinrobe-5, Ballina-4, Westport-4 and Swinford-3 Schools.

The Board appointed the recently elected County GAA Youths Officer, Pat Byrne, The Neale, as County Organiser, and he will be drawing up the fixtures and the basic rules. The competition will probably be run off in the month of June. Rounders, which has a strong tradition in the Castlebar and Breaffy areas, has attracted 16 Schools, Ballyglass, Brackloon, Culleens, Foxford, Newport, Glenmore, Quay-Westport,Cara, Kilmaine, Ballyheane, Breaffy-girls School, Swinford-2 teams, Kiltimagh, Ballintubber, Tavneena and St. Angela's N.S.-Castlebar-3 teams.

This competition will be run in the format of a half day blitz in the Castlebar area during May and June. Further details can be had from Paraic Mc Keon, Newport N.S. It is in the promotion of Hurling at Primary School level that the Board received its greatest feedback. Children who have only been introduced to the game have developed at an alarming rate, due mainly to good Coaching employed for the first time last year. The Hurling skills award scheme will again be run off this year.

Schools interested in Hurling Coaching should contact Jackie Coyne, Knock N.S.

Inter Schools athletics competitions will be introduced for the first time, and will mainly involve track events and relays. It is hoped to run off a whole programme on a special Sports day. All details can be had from Eamon Jennings, Ballintubber N.S. It is envisaged that a similar number of teams will again compete in the Camogie Competitions, which are run off by the Mayo Camogie Board. Details can be had from Marian Flannery, Kincon, Ballina.
