The winners led 3-4 to 0-2 at half time and came up againt an improved performance from the Newport girls. Ballyvary: R Walsh, S O Donnell, A Norton, P Reddington, M Joyce, E Jennings, F Joyce, L. Lavelle, G Reilly.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS COMPETITION Ballycroy Central 1-8 Balla 0-7. In the 11-a-side competition Ballyvary held out for a deserving win against Balla, who were very much in control in the opening 10 mins, but despite winning the better possession couldn't reflect it in scoring terms. Ray Walsh opened the scoring for Ballyvary in the 5th minute later David Mc Keon gave the winners a 4 point cushion. The same player added a further point before Joseph Monaghan got Ballina's first score in the 7th minute. Colm Sheridan and Padraig O Neill kept this side in contention with a number of well taken scores. The goal reported the teams at the break 1-5 to 0-5. The second half was most exciting with plenty of goalmouth thrills at both ends. Balla mounted very strong pressure in the clinching minutes but good defence work by Michael Walsh, Sean Reilly and Seamus Kenny saw the Balla lads deprived of the efforts to secure match-winning scores. Ballyvary: R Neill, M Walsh, S Reilly, Alan Lawless, S Kenny, J Mc Govern, K Hyland, R Walsh, B Bourke, D Mc Keon and G Costello. Sub. J Keaveney. Balla: Declan Costello, T Mc Donnell, J Corcoran, K Dempsey, J Mullaney, G Keane, M Conway, P O Neill (0-3), J Monaghan (0-1), C Sheridan (0-2), J P Mc Gough. Sub used-N Nestor(0-1). Referee: W Murphy-Parke.
Geesala and Claremorris Win County Mini-Sevens Parke GAA grounds hosted the County semi finals and finals in boys and girls football on Monday, May 11th. Despite the atrocious weather and ground conditions, the standard of play was of a very high standard. Both champions, Claremorris and Geesala, won their first ever County titles and on the evening, coped best with the conditions. Claremorris had to go to extra time to defeat a powerful Swinford team by 1 goal, and they had excellent performances from Gregory Mulkerrins, John Paul Mc Mahon, Niall Whittle, Paul Nevin, Eamon Griffith, Niall Heneghan and Gary Gallagher. Their semi-final victory was over Parke/Crimlin, while Swinford defeated the Erris Champions, Eachlaim. But the Erris girls football champions, Geesala N.S., fought a spirited rearguard action in the second half against a more experienced Neale/Glencorrib combination. Their crucial scores came in the first half (2-1) when playing with the strong wind, and the Neale/Glencorrib were unable to overhaul them, eventually losing by 2-1 to 0-6. The Geesala team consisted of Natasha Gaughan, Breda Donohue, Paula Scanlon, Rachel Barrett, Brid Coyle, Edel Lindsay, Sinead Halley and Mary Barrett. The Neale/Glencorrib team, who have contested all 5 County Mini Sevens finals were Mary O Malley, Monica Killeen, Barbara Mylotte, Elaine Kennedy, Lynda Duffy, Tracey Biggins, Bernie Maye, Paula Byrne, Helen Togher and Claire Hughes.
BALLINROBE AREA RESULTS The Neale N.S. boys team had two convincing victories last week against Gortjordan N.S. and Kilmaine N.S. and put themselves back in strong contention for a final place. The game in Cong was a ding dong struggle, with both sides enjoying periods of domination, and Gortjordan ending up ahead at half-time by 2 points. But the Neale had a marked edge in midfield where Enda Higgins and Ronan Casey were on top against Andrew Casey and Patrick Kelly, and winning scores came from Neil Varley-3-2, John Higgins-1-0-, Enda Hughes-1-1, Ronan Casey-0-2. The final score was Neale 5-5, Gortjordan 3-6.
A gale force wind dominated the Kilmaine v Neale fixture in Kilmaine on Thursday afternoon, but it did not deter either set of forwards from hitting the target-the final score was Neale (6-16), Kilmaine (6-12), reflecting a score for each of the 40 minutes of play. The Neale led 4-11 to 4-3 at half time, and this score was attributable to Neil Varley who scored 4-7 in the first half, but with the elements at their back, Kilmaine came back into the game. An Enda Hughes goal consolidated the Neale victory. Scorers: Neil Varley (4-7), John Higgins (1-2), Enda Hughes (1-2), Ronan Casey (0-4), John Paul Walsh (0-1). Cathal Conroy, John Kelly and Seamus O Brien also played well.
TOURMAKEADY VICTORY Treenlaur N.S., Tourmakeady, extended their unbeaten run with a 4-15 to 1-13 victory over Gortjordan N.S. in a free-flowing game that could herald Gortjordan's exit from the championship. If Treenlaur N.S. and the Neale N.S. win their last games against Kilmaine N.S. and Partry N.S.respectively, they will contest the area final at the weekend in Cong.
CLAREMORRIS 7-A-SIDE FINAL In a rip roaring game in Garrymore before a large crowd, Facefield N.S. and Meelickmore N.S. ended all square 3-6 to 1-12 in the final. Meelickmore led 0-8 to 1-2 at half -time, and with the benefit of the slight breeze to come, were generally expected to win. But Facefield changed all that with a first minute second half goal, and from then to the end, tension mounted as play swung from end to end. All the skills of the game came to the fore as both sides attempted the match winning scores, and Facefield earned a draw with a dramatic late equaliser. Facefield team consisted of Jonathan Coyle, M Nally (0-1), J Moran, M Moran (0-2), V Moran (2-2), J Nally (1-0), J Moran (0-1). Sub.Elaine Mc Donagh. Meelickmore: K Slattery, A Griffin, M Mullin ( 0-1), K Duggan (0-3), M Walsh (0-3), R Higgins (0-4), D Morley (1-1). |
